I know Iโ€™ve posted loads about this (sorry!) but thereโ€™s nothing quite like the hard copy of something you helped make. Thanks to all contributors!

Hello everyone. After 15.5 years, I will shortly be closing my Twitter account. It's a shame, I've mostly enjoyed using it, but I do not see a path back under the current ownership. I am on bluesky at @georgegilbert.bsky.social Please drop me a DM if you wish to stay in touch.

Been obvious for a long time what a divided and unhappy society the UK is. I worry itโ€™s reaching its terminus as one that functions effectively. Why is this? Itโ€™s massively polarised with little unity. If a big riot kicked off in London I doubt the police or courts could cope.

Delighted to say I have signed a contract with @RoutledgeHist @routledgebooks for a textbook 'New directions in late imperial Russia' that I will co-write with my amazing colleague Jen Keating. Thanks to the five peer reviewers. Looking forward to getting started- due early 2027.

I should say 'due' = intended submission date. Not sure when it will be published yet!

There are some interesting people on Twitter and there are pluses, but, in light of recent events, a case for engagement is becoming harder to sustainโ€ฆ

People are currently attempting to burn down a hotel housing migrants. This is not a โ€œprotestโ€. Itโ€™s racist thuggery on a par with what we saw in Nazi Germany in the 1930โ€™s. We need unequivocal condemnation and forceful police intervention on a commensurate scale.

As someone who has worked on this in a markedly different context protest politics never draws on uniform support: crowds arenโ€™t homogenous and contain numerous interlocking and sometimes contrasting ideas. Supporters and critics will pick and choose the bits they want to stress.
Any large instance of โ€˜contentious politicsโ€™ (riots, spikey protests, insurrection) will generally draw upon a wide cross-section of people and grievances. Supporters will say itโ€™s ideologically homogenous. Critics will say itโ€™s just criminals & reprobates. Both are wrong 1/4

Quoting this piece by @irgarner in light of last few days. Russian disinfo has fanned tensions in GB causing riots. It isnโ€™t about sowing confusion/true v. false but rather exploiting existing divisions until society falls apart at the seams. Understanding this is so crucial.
Replying to @irgarner
Russian information war isn't about confusing you or obscuring the truth. It's about exploiting divisions in our societies until we destroy each other. The latest round of violence in the UK is another manifestation of that war. foreignpolicy.com/2024/03/09โ€ฆ

This stuff is just completely ahistorical. We had the British Union or Facsists in the 1930s, the National Front in the 70S, BNP winning European Parliament seats 20 years ago.... All blamed the "establishment" for their racism and hate.

Britain doesn't have a 'far-right problem'. Britain has a problem with a dominant liberal class that for years ignored legitimate mainstream concerns over economic injustice, crime and immigration, and is now experiencing the blowback.

The fake name โ€œAli Al-Shakatiโ€ has been circulating online in connection with the alleged Southport attacker. @KDenkWrites has uncovered the source of this misinformation: a fake news website believed to be run by Russians. ๐Ÿ“ป shorturl.at/hzlNO #TimesRadio

I always enjoy reading intelligent commentary I don't agree with. This piece @LRB @TomFStevenson is half the story - more needs to be done to account for Russia's role.
In the new @LRB, I wrote about Nato, its local converts, and the US strategic position in Europe. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/n15/โ€ฆ

Clive has been at the forefront of raising awareness of the climate emergency but hey, he didnโ€™t want to take a fake oath and put his feet on a seat, so must be a bad dude. ๐Ÿค”
