Tracy, MN F5 #Tornado – June 13, 1968! The only violent tornado among five confirmed in Minnesota that day struck Tracy just after 7 pm. Nine people were killed, at least 125 were injured, and more than 100 homes sustained major damage. A boxcar was reportedly lifted from the tracks and carried into a residential area. tornadotalk.com/tracy-mn-f5-… #mnwx #OTD #tornadohistory

June 13, 2001: A large outbreak of 40 tornadoes impacted the Central Plains. Most of the twisters were weak, though four were significant (F2 ). The strongest was a highly-visible stovepipe F4 near Ruby, Nebraska, that destroyed a farmstead and shredded vehicles. #wxhistory

June 13, 1899: A violent tornado struck Washington County, Nebraska. The F4 passed directly through Herman. About 90% of the town's homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed, and only 12 residences were left unscathed. 11 people were killed and 25 were injured. #wxhistory

50 years ago today — June 13, 1976: A violent F5 #tornado struck near Jordan, Iowa, killing 1 as it swept away homes and well-built farmsteads. The extreme damage surveyed by Ted Fujita was later cited among the most intense tornado damage he ever examined.

Assuming that the central pressure deficit is 50 mb (SB-LCL 80 mb above surface, funnel 5/8 of the way to the ground), yesterday’s tornado in Northgate, Saskatchewan can be estimated to be EF3/150 using @sambrandt99’s work. * Key assumptions listed in replies below.
Here’s a guide to estimating tornado intensity from its minimum central pressure deficit, based on the solution to a Rankine vortex in cyclostrophic balance (-p’=ρ*V^2, where V is the maximum tangential wind speed)

As someone who has just hit year 10 of storm chasing. I’ve found that some of the best tornado days come from the days that “don’t look amazing”. It’s easy to over analyze models and parameter spaces but in reality, we literally don’t know that much. And in 2026 with the NWS losing funding and losing a significant amount of balloons, it’s obvious the models are LACKING significantly. Which is all even more reason to be out there and just chase. Don’t over analyze and remember, tornadoes can happen even if you don’t think they will. Get out there and chase. #wxtwitter

Given the lull here in NA, I'm sharing my guide on storm chasing in South America. I did the best I could with all relevant materials I could gather: climatology, trends, ENSO influences, sources of convective outlook, live data and models, and challenges youtube.com/watch?v=IySw8bFx…
