「赤毛のアン」は確か、「トム・ソーヤの冒険」の次だったと思う。予告編を見て「えー！次は女の子が主人公かよ」と文句垂れ、見る気を失ったんだけど、父が「赤毛のアンか！それはぜひ見よう！」と珍しく言うので、見るハメに。 ところが意外と面白かった。かなり面白かった。面白すぎて小説まで手を出し、シリーズ10巻みんな読破した。 英語の長文が苦手だった私はどうにかできないかと考え、英語版を選んだ。ギルバートが髪の毛つかんで「ニンジン！」って言ったり、アンが石板で頭をぶったりするシーンが、ろくに英単語がわからないにも関わらず理解でき、「知らない単語だらけでも読解は可能なんだ！」と気づくきっかけとなった。これがなければ京大に受かったかどうか怪しい。 大学生となり、塾で子どもたちを指導する中で理想の指導者とは？と悩んだ。最も参考になったのが、アンの義父、マシューだった。知識もない、学歴もない、人付き合いも苦手、他の男性と比べたら見劣りのするところばかりのマシューが、アンにとってはかけがえのない存在だったことに気づいたとき、「そうか、それぞれの子どもたちにとってのマシューになればよいのか！」と、目を開かされた。 マシューは、アンの話を楽しそうに、嬉しそうに聞き続ける。そしてアンの成長に驚き、誰よりも喜ぶ。アンが悲しんでいるとオロオロとうろたえ、どうかアンが元気になりますようにと祈る。マシューはうろたえるだけで、何をするでもないように見える。でも、マシューのこうしたアプローチこそが、孤児で育ち、不信感や警戒心、不安で苛まれても不思議ではないアンの心を安心と喜びで包み、この上ない向学心の源にもなったのではないか、と気がついた。私の中で、マシューは理想の指導者像。 「赤毛のアン」のアニメに出会っていなかったら、今のように教育のことをずっと考え続ける人間になっていたかどうか。この高畑氏のアニメには、大変お世話になった。私の人生を変えたと言っても過言ではないかもしれない。
