Govt strategy for new higher technical qualifications take no account of input from union learning reps , LEPs or devolved powers for Mayors & local councils. Must have access to learners / workers at all ages as well as 16-24. See my concerns out today researchprofessionalnews.com…
This morning, before heading to Parliament, it was great to attend the @GMB_union Congress at the @WGBpl Blackpool Conference Centre and meet delegates from across the country, as well as GMB General Secretary @GMBGarySmith.
As a proud @GMBNWI Member for the past 17 years, it was particularly pleasing to welcome the union back to #Blackpool and showcase the outstanding hospitality our town has to offer.
Conferences like this play a vital role in supporting our local economy, bringing thousands of visitors into the town, supporting local businesses, and helping to sustain jobs throughout the year.
I hope everyone attending Congress enjoys their time in Blackpool and takes the opportunity to experience everything our town has to offer.

Happy National Fish and Chip Day 🐟🍟
Blackpool played a big part in the rise of fish and chips as a seaside favourite. By the early 1900s, our promenade was lined with chip shops catering to thousands of visitors from industrial towns, helping make fish and chips the beloved British seaside classic it is today!
You will find them in the heart of every community of the UK and many of them are family-run and independent and we should support them – I, for one, don't take much convincing.
As a Blackpool lad, I’ve had my fair share of fish and chips – so it’s only right to mark #NationalFishandChipsDay with a proper chippy tea, I’ll be having mine tonight! 🍴
Blackpool Pride Festival will be celebrating its 20th anniversary this weekend! 🏳️🌈
This weekend’s events mark two decades of bringing local people and visitors together to celebrate under this year’s powerful, community-chosen theme, ‘One Love, One Pride’.
I’ll be proud to march in the @BlackpoolPride Parade today, shoulder to shoulder with the LGBTQ community and allies.
Happy Pride Blackpool!

After the Manchester 10k, campaigning in the hills of Hindley was a tough ask!
And my opponents are getting a little more desperate in what they are throwing at me.
But I won’t be deflected and am sticking to the game plan! 💪🏻
As I often say in interviews and in the Department, "we have to change the question the system asks from "what benefits are you entitled to" to "how do we help you change your life".
From BBC PM programme...last Thursday (28 May).
Nine years on from the Manchester Arena terrror attack my thoughts are with those who lost their lives, the survivors, and their loved ones. They will never be forgotten. Greater Manchester came together to show that love & hope triumphs over hate & division. We always will. 🐝
Great article from @ChrisWebbMP. Chris has done fantastic work promoting employment and opportunity in Blackpool. His jobs fair is among the best of its kind in the country. Pleased to work with him on this agenda. telegraph.co.uk/business/202…
The government has taken a huge step forward in supporting small businesses, sole traders and freelancers with the largest crackdown on late payments in over 25 years.
Blackpool’s small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. Our family-run B&Bs, cafes, tradespeople, freelancers and independent manufacturers create local jobs, keep our high streets alive and give young people opportunities close to home. 🤝

Valentina, who used to work in my local newspaper kiosk, has sent me this message: “Thank you very much to everyone who remembers me. May God grant everyone health, happiness, love, joy, success, peace of mind. I wish you all the best in your life, love, good luck and happiness.”
I promised we would fix our broken railways.
Today Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express return to public ownership. Run for the public good, not private profit.
This Labour government is putting passengers first.
This week I wrote to the Office of Rail and Road to back Avanti West Coast’s bid to restore and expand direct rail services between Blackpool North and London Euston.
Strong transport links are vital to supporting our town’s growth and providing our residents with access to opportunities.
I’ve urged the ORR to approve these services without further delay and will keep pushing for the rail connections Blackpool deserves 🚆
In case you missed it: the Labour Government is getting on with bringing rail into public control - including GWR 🚄
This rail operator will be coming under public control on 13 December, and there are more to come!
