(1/) A 🧵 on GroundUp’s 2023 Wrapped. As we are making our way through the first month of 2024, we want to highlight the organizing work that GroundUp members have been engaging in over the last year!
ALT GroundUp 2023 Wrapped, Highlights Of Our Community Work
ALT The first item is the “Hold The Line Rally” which was aimed to stop Ford’s development plans on the Greenbelt and repeal Bill 23. The second item is the “Earth Day Bike Ride” which was a community bike ride on Earth Day 2023, and free bike tune ups were provided by Red Raccoon Bike Rescue. The third item is the “WRDSB & WCDSB Delegations” where allies chalked supportive messages for queer students at the board meetings and delegated on protecting the rights of all students to safety, privacy, and dignity.
ALT The fourth item is “KPL Drag Storytime Defence” where the community showed up to support drag queens at a KPL storytime from bigots. The fifth item is “Enhanced Sidewalk Snowclearing”, where a citizen-led working group advocated and delegated at the City of Waterloo Council for better snow clearing and transit stops. The sixth item is the “UW Rally” where the KW community showed up to support students after a hateful attack on campus.
ALT The seventh item is the “Stop the Sprawl Rally” to once again protect the Greenbelt and repeal Bill 23. The eight item is the “Queer Youth Defence” where allies and members of the 2SLGBTQ community counter-protested the hate “Million March” rally. The ninth item is “Anti-Hate Street Harassment By-law” where GroundUp members delegated in support of the aforementioned by-law.
While the three highest funded regions receive an average of $18.30 per person in federal arts funding, Waterloo Region receives just over $3.36 per capita - a $9.3 million gap in 2022 alone!
Our community, and underfunded communities across Canada, deserve better.

While you're at it, demand and organize for adequate shelters and housing for all in all our cities/towns. Current shelters are almost always full, packed too full, and don't meet people's various needs.
Currently on scene at several locations involving flooding to roadways and transit crossings.
