The Growing Kitchen is a community led garden on the Wenlock Barn estate in Hackney, london N1. Started in 2008 it is a focal point for community and wildlife.
Excellent video, thanks! I keep hearing, that I'm supposed to do an 'annual hay cut' in July, as well as mowing in September. This doesn't make sense to me, as so many life-cycles would be disrupted by mowing in July. Should I really only mow in September?
Thereβs something that needs addressing. I felt compelled to make this video to explain why a #NoMowMay, if undertaken on its own, is a PROBLEM for #wildlife. This video will no doubt ruffle feathers, but people need the right informationπ#NoMowSummeryoutu.be/iZRpX774ViI?si=266bβ¦
Last year Hackney Council did some wonderful work in Shoreditch Park by creating wildflower meadows that were fenced off, they looked lovely. Some of the fences have been removed and the meadow has now been trampled over; leaving an awful mess.
There was a time when there were few House Sparrows in the GK, so we created an environment for them, over the Easter weekend thirty Sparrows were counted, in one go in the wildlife area.
Last year, it was a worrying time for the GK with few amphibians in the garden so we created a lot of habitat for them, and it has paid off. This year the pond has an abundance of newt and toad spawn. We have also created another pond, with another one to be dug out soon.
The GK manages the Wenlock Orchard, last week 3500 wildflower seeds were sown, 4 new fruit trees, and 20 Hawthorn whips, were planted. The GK is committed to improving wildlife habitats on the Wenlock Barn estate. Come and see what we have done, Croley Street N1
"Someone recently asked me for evidence of the decline in wildlife. I replied that when I was younger, I used to drive in the countryside and the windscreen of my car would be covered in flattened insects. Evidence of the loss of important pollinators and food sources
Some years ago there were no sparrows in the garden, the GK created an environment for them and feeding stations; there are now thirty in the garden, proving 'Build It and they will come'.
