Some people leave a legacy that lasts long after they're gone. Born in Bermuda in 1873, Matilda Smith Williams dedicated her life to caring for others. Upon her death in 1940, she left her property with one wish—that it become a home for elderly women in need. That wish became reality. The Matilda Smith Williams Senior Residence Home opened in 1962 and has been caring for Bermuda's seniors ever since. In 2010, 82 people in Bermuda were experiencing homelessness. Today, that number is 1,331. That's not a distant social issue. It's families, workers and individuals across our island living without the stability of a safe home. And the true number is likely even higher, many people in temporary or insecure arrangements never get counted at all.
