In the October 10 policy meeting, Trustee Saunders led a lengthy discussion about employment equity and in the process made statements which were offensive, inappropriate, and extremely harmful. Trustee Saunders should be sanctioned for continuing these remarks.

We demand better from our elected officials. This kind of rhetoric must not be tolerated around the board table.

#OntEd👇a direct callout of macro-aggressions and harmful rhetoric is overdue. This is a great example of leadership creating a safe school environment for ALL. @johnklein and @mduarte_hcdsb we expect @hcdsb to do the same this year. The status quo is not what our students need.
Despite the ridiculous motion that was being debated...this was a pretty inspiring show of unity...and a master class in how to shut down motions rooted in racism. Label the anti-woke for what they really are. #OntEd youtube.com/live/zhMJgWfmX6A…

The results of the @YCDSB vote on raising the #PrideFlag are shameful. Those who voted against have sent a clear message to 2SLGBTQ students and staff. Hollow arguments have won out and a community which has been repeatedly attacked is further marginalized.

To all 2SLGBTQ staff and students @YCDSB, know that we see you, we love you and we support you. The same can be said on behalf of countless teachers, allies, and advocates, many of whom we heard in this same meeting (especially @Its_JonahJ @anthea_peta )

Absolutely amazing speech and fight from these student trustees. This should not be this complicated. These student trustees are outstanding and inspiring. 🏳️‍🌈
Listening to the archaic, 19th century commentary by some of the @ycdsb Trustees is so disheartening. The student Trustees, as always, speak with wisdom, acceptance and passion. Stay tuned....Vote to come.

The learning never ends. And learning from people with lived experience is invaluable. We can’t pretend to know what someone from a marginalized community contends with every day and we can’t ignore what our @HCDSB students tell us @HCDSBEquity #studentsymposium

The anti-LGBTQ rhetoric is growing louder at school boards across ON. We can't write this off as a fringe group of right wing extremists. These are our neighbours; their kids go to school with ours. It is our duty to stand against hatred. #AllyIsAVerb thestar.com/politics/provinc…

4. Use your privilege. In a heated confrontational situation, that can mean physically putting yourself between aggressors and vulnerable folks. It can mean visibly showing support for groups that are being targeted. It can mean speaking up when they can't safely do so.

5. Amplify! Use your privilege to open doors and create space for people to advocate and share their experiences in rooms and at tables where you have access. Amplify their voices and stand with folks who deserve support.
