Realizing no one owes you anything is one of the most liberating concepts. You stop wasting energy collecting imaginary debt.

He knows when you've been sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows this because your pattern-of-life can be inferred by looking at records of your phone's basic internet activity—called "metadata." This is the core of modern mass surveillance. He should be in jail.

doctors have the weirdest guild. med school is more cutthroat than ibanking, then they go through a sorority match, are exploited as cheap labor in a training system designed by a cokehead, and the reward is being a highly paid amazon warehouse worker but for insurance companies

My wife just said "if you hate everyone, you should eat something, and if you think everyone hates you, you should go to sleep" and I don't think I've heard a better life hack

Ladders, roofs and snowmobiles…avoid all three.
working in radiology has taught me a lot of things, but mostly that way more people are falling off ladders than I ever thought. like probably on your street somewhere someone is falling off a ladder right now

At the center of our planet is a solid sphere of iron & nickel the size of India (1,500mi across) that's as hot as the surface of the sun, and its interaction w the molten iron surrounding it generates the magnetic field that keeps our atmosphere from blowing away. pic: phys-org

clickbait radiology report impressions would make reading the findings much more exciting. IMPRESSION: pneumonia as suspected, but you won’t believe the incidental finding hiding below the diaphragm!

The price of 1 million lumen-hours since the Middle Ages. A lightbulb does that in ~600 hours, or about 2 months of daily usage. So multiply these prices by 6 to see how much it used to cost to use a lamp for one year. So many things we take for granted used to be such luxuries.

A wise man once said to me. “You have a nail in your foot. You can practice mindfulness about the nail. Go to therapy and talk how the nail feels bad. Gratitude journal about how other people have more nails in their feet. Or you can take the nail out of your foot.”

Went to pharmacy today and forgot I switched insurance. Med would be: $125 without insurance. $4 with insurance. Even though insurance doesn’t actually pay anything. Is this a feature or bug of our system?

I just saw someone meticulously sanitize a shopping cart with antiseptic wipes before walking into the grocery store without a mask in case you’re wondering why the pandemic still isn’t over.

If you, like me, are tired of shallow and short-term reporting on China, and need to zoom out, I'd like to tell you a story. It's about an ancient, hidden force influencing its policies today, from Xinjiang to the Pacific, from Tibet to Beijing.
