What happens as an internal solitary wave meets a slope?🌊

Features that form at the bed expand as vortices through the water column resulting in the wave breaking, causing a big mixing event #FlumeFriday
It’s Polar Pride Day! 🏳️🌈❄️
Today, we celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQIA community to polar science. Polar Pride represents a commitment to support and enhance diversity and inclusion in polar research.

Check out this great new comprehensive review article on dynamics in the Southern Ocean, and useful thoughts on future research priorities
doi.org/10.1029/2022RG000781
Co-authored by over thirty Australian and New Zealand climate science experts, a new review shows that cross-disciplinary collaboration and community building are crucial for solving the mysteries of the Southern Ocean’s dynamic climate systems.

Highlighting the importance of process based and laboratory experiments:
"laboratory experiments remain a crucial tool in understanding many systems where the governing dynamical or thermodynamical equations and/or boundary conditions are not necessarily known"
We have on offer a 4-year Lectureship in Fluid Dynamics 💦 in the Vortex Dynamics research group in the School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of St Andrews. Feel free to spread the word or get in touch! 🙂

@GuardianScience wouldn’t publish similarly fringe, non-peer-reviewed reports from the few scientists still denying climate change, so why do this for geo-engineering? Science by press release without debate is dangerous with such severe ethical implications of projects
Attendees were told to focus on the science and ignore the ethics and governance issues. Science first, ethics later shows a total disregard for the impacts on the most vulnerable of such a potentially dangerous idea.
We have seen time and time again how the public and donors will get behind expensive and flashy looking solutions that don’t stand up to scrutiny. Journalists must question why copy and paste press releases are being published without scrutiny or dissenting opinions represented?
