Philosophy is great because you start out thinking you're gonna answer all the hard questions and you end up thinking you can't even ask them.

oh my god inflicting ai tutors on the poorest in society, when their effects are so little understood, is the height of irresponsibility. this government has been entirely captured by the tech industry
Keir Starmer has announced that AI tutors will be rolled out to 450,000 children on free school meals to close the attainment gap. Speaking at London Tech Week, the PM also announced the government's new AI jobseeking tool.

I feel like this whole Platner situation could’ve been avoided if a bunch of upper middle class leftists hadn’t seen the most obvious red flags imaginable and thought, “that’s just what rough, salty, Ohio Waffle House type working class people are like”

The idea is to find a group of people most people regard as terrible examples, use them to make revoking passports a more acceptable form of punishment, then expand it from there.
The U.S. will start revoking passports this week for parents who owe $100,000 or more in child support and soon will expand the policy. apnews.com/article/passports…

you'd never know from this framing that when he took office the deficit was $12.5 billion

Sustaining a family on a single income isn't great for corporate profits, and anyway the labor in cheaper abroad. Join a union.
What was so wrong with THIS that it needed to be completely destroyed and turned into the mess we live in today?

A truly AWFUL situation; last week Border Patrol dropped a “nearly blind” Burmese refugee off in front of a random donut shop in Buffalo, five miles from his house. He was just found dead, having never made it home.

I will simply never recover from reading this sentence: "Since Georgia implemented work requirements in 2020, they have spent twice as much on Deloitte consultants and administrative costs as on healthcare for people."
Today, Luke Farrell explains how complex eligibility requirements have turned America’s safety net into a lucrative revenue stream for monopolistic private contractors.

32 people died in ICE custody last year; 7 of them in December alone. It was the deadliest year in more than 2 decades. for years, human rights groups have heavily documented the inhumane conditions of these sites. The ICE detention system is growing larger and more abusive, with less transparency and accountability (it’s always been bad, but is worsening) theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i… aclu.org/news/prisoners-righ… americanimmigrationcouncil.o…
ICE is sexually abusing males in their custody by grabbing and bursting their testicles according to the ACLU and the guardian.

The Trump administration claims that Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse, was armed and a threat when agents shot him in the back and killed him. In fact, as best we can tell at this stage from the multiple videos, he was: a.) a Good Samaritan trying to help a small woman with a backpack whom agents had thrown to the ground and pepper sprayed; b.) unarmed, his legally licensed weapon already having been removed by another agent and taken away from the scene seconds earlier; c.) on his knees, pinned by agents and no threat to anyone at the moment two agents shot him approximately ten times in the back. As with Renee Good, it's disgusting not only that the authorities execute a person in cold blood but also that they lie about it to defame their victim and then block an investigation by local police that might establish the facts.

To be clear about what this depicts: An immigration officer threw a woman onto the ground. Alex Pretti, a registered nurse on scene as a legal observer, is filming and goes to help the woman up. He is then pepper sprayed and thrown to the ground for no discernible reason. Many officer surround and assault him; one removes his firearm, which police say appears to have been legally registered. They then execute him with a hail of bullets. They are, objectively speaking, both cowards and criminals, while Pretti is what we teach people an American ought to be.

This is simply untenable. No rational, functioning opposition party would actively step in to fund the primary enforcement mechanism of the authoritarian takeover they ostensibly oppose.
If Democrats aren’t whipping votes against ICE funding, and letting conservative members vote to pass it, it means the Democratic Party supports ICE funding. If your opposition to fascism is performative, then you don’t actually oppose fascism. prospect.org/2026/01/21/jeff…

The ignorance and gaslighting of these people is genuinely astounding. You DON'T need batteries to store renewable energies. BY FAR the most mature and widely deployed form of grid-scale energy storage is to lift water to a high spot with the renewable energy, and when you want to get the energy back, you let it fall with gravity to move a turbine (similar to the way a dam works). It's called pumped hydro storage (PHS), it accounts for over 94% of all long-duration grid storage capacity globally (hydropower.org/factsheets/pu…), and it's extremely efficient (80% round-trip efficiency: atb.nrel.gov/electricity/202…). The notion that because you don't make a battery you are somehow subservient to China to store renewable energy is simply complete and utter hogwash.
Lutnick at Davos: "Why are you going to do solar and wind? Why would Europe agree to be net zero in 2030 when they don't make a battery? They don't make a battery! So if they go 2030, they are deciding to be subservient to China." (Get a load of the looks on the other panelists' faces)

NVIDIA allegedly contacted Anna's Archive directly for access to ~500 terabytes of "pirated" books and papers for pre-training their LLMs Anna's warned them the collections were illegal and copyrighted. NVIDIA's data strategy team pushed anyway; executives gave the green light within days, per internal docs cited in the lawsuit.

The NYT has a new video analysis of Renee Good's shooting which is careful, accurate, and clear - he walked across the path of a moving car, then leaned in and shot her with his feet well clear of the vehicle. 1/ nytimes.com/2026/01/15/video…
