25 November is the international day for the elimination of violence against women. This year, like every year for the past few, we’ll be posting the UK women killed by men since #IDEVAW last year. Starting at 8.30am and commemorating one woman every 5 mins.
** OUT TOMORROW**
As most trials of men accused of killing women in the UK in 2022 have now concluded the criminal justice process, tomorrow we a will be publishing the most comprehensive data on femicides in 2022 in the UK.
🕯️ Justice for Kulsuma Akter
Today, Habibur Masum has been found guilty of the murder of Kulsuma Akter. Kulsuma was a young mother who bravely fled abuse, only to be tracked down, stalked, and killed while pushing her baby in a pram in Bradford.
Her death was preventable, and the loss of Kulsuma is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of Honour Based Abuse and coercive control. We must do more to protect women like her.
Our thoughts are with her family.
We will remember Kulsuma.
We will keep fighting for change.

10 November 2024: Harshita Brella, 24, living in Corby, was strangled to death and found inside a car boot in Ilford. Her husband, Pankaj Lamba, 23, fled the country and has been charged with murder, rape, sexual assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.
Thank you @sharandhaliwal_ for interviewing me for this piece & continuing to tell the world how the brave women in this article including my sister Banaz were failed by the system. Unacceptable

Holly Newton, 15, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Logan MacPhail, after months of controlling behaviour, stalking, and threats. Yet under the law, she isn’t recognised as a victim of domestic abuse because she was under 16. Her mother, Micala Trussler, is fighting to change that with Holly’s Law.
“We put everything down to immature behaviour. It was so much more than that,” Micala says. MacPhail bombarded Holly with messages, tracked her movements, and forced her to call him late into the night. “One of the most shocking things we discovered was that he was making her phone him until 4am. We had no clue.”
When Holly finally ended the relationship, MacPhail refused to let her go. He stalked her through Hexham for 45 minutes before leading her into an alley and stabbing her multiple times.
“He decided if he couldn’t have her, no one else would.”
MacPhail was sentenced to life with a minimum of 17 years, but Micala says Holly’s murder wasn’t just a knife crime - it was the ultimate act of coercive control.
“We want the law changed so other families know what to look out for. We just didn’t see it coming.”
Keir Starmer has pledged to look into it, but promises aren’t enough. Action I needed. I stand with Micala, Holly and young victims like her should be seen and recognised as victim’s of #coercivecontrol.
“How many more girls have to die before we recognise this for what it is?”

Suicide as a consequence of domestic abuse is more common than homicide - the test for manslaughter may be too rigorous as this awful case demonstrates? Ryan Wellings killed me,’ she wrote. But the jury disagreed

Karma Nirvana’s Response to Richard Holden MP’s Cousin Marriage Bill 🕊️
Richard Holden MP’s proposal to ban cousin marriage, introduced on 10th December 2024, raises significant concerns. While we acknowledge the challenges surrounding cousin marriage, this bill risks harm by creating division and failing to consult experts or survivors in regards to this bill.
Our Concerns:
➡️ No consultation with the Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) sector, which has decades of expertise
➡️ Harmful framing that fuels hate and drives a wedge between communities
➡️ Rushing through ill-considered legislation that neglects survivor voices and frontline insights, and risks further marginalising communities or creating unintended harm
Real change must be survivor-led, prioritising safety, dignity, and collaboration - not political exploitation. Karma Nirvana is committed to addressing all forms of violence and abuse. We support a government-led, sector-wide consultation to tackle this complex issue responsibly.

🧵 Shocking new research from @YouthEndowFund shows the extent of our failure to support young people experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violent...
🔺 49% of teenagers in a relationship in the last year have experienced violent or controlling behaviour from their partner.
"My biggest fear is if children can't access the support they need that they're then going to end up in the same position as Holly and potentially be murdered,"
- Holly Newton's mother, Micala Trussler.

Racial Disparity in charging decisions within the CPS.
The Crown Prosecution Service’s role is to make fair and objective decisions free of any bias. That goal is not being met. There are racial disparities in the legal decision making of the CPS. This is illustrated in recently published data cps.gov.uk/sites/default/fil…
