Looking at course surveys for my "Introduction to Data Analytics" course, I continue to be surprised how many students have taken some linear algebra, statistics/probability, or calculus in high school but have little or no experience with coding or using spreadsheets.

This is purely a comment on HS curriculum. A math class can be a great place to learn a little code and work with some data.

A lot of this probably true of many CS/ML programs, but not as broadly true of academia as some would guess. Lots of emphasis on data work, interpretability, etc. in places like digital humanities & computational social sciences.
Universities don't teach you this:
There are stark differences between academia and industry roles.
Every data scientist and machine learning professional I know had to find out the hard way. Some still think it's all the same.

Re:loops in R, I think it makes sense to use the split-apply-combine approach as much as possible when working with data frames, but I also fall back on loops when I'm tired or I can't think of how to do something. Same goes for me with pandas/Python.

I prefer loops in #RStats because I found them easier as a beginner. I sometimes feel like I’m a minority/missing out on something by not using apply tho. What do other people use? Is it worth making the switch? #R #DataScience #coding

What does the verb "to theorize" mean to you? I ask this question in good faith. I know there are multiple definitions, and humanities usage is different from the primary scientific usage, but I also think there are multiple humanities meanings.
