It’s no surprise Iowa is one of the three states that has fully recovered in both reading and math since the pandemic.
We prioritized students by reopening schools for in-person learning in August 2020 and passing laws to ensure evidence-based instruction in reading and math.
Iowa is proof that when you focus on students, results follow.

Education stagnation: Only 3 states have fully bounced back in both math and reading since the pandemic: Iowa, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
Just 6 of 23 states beat 2019 math levels, and only 4 of 20 exceeded 2019 ELA levels.
The recovery gap remains wide.

The state of Iowa and @Cognizant have been fully committed from the onset to employing an Iowa-based workforce throughout the duration of our engagement.
At no point during our negotiations was it even considered to employ H-1B visa holders.
The state’s daily IT operations will continue to be supported by Iowans, for Iowans, as they are now.
Community note
The governor's statement claims Iowa IT operations will continue supported solely by Iowans with no H-1B consideration in the Cognizant contract. Iowa is instead laying off ~200 state IT workers to outsource those operations.

It was with heavy hearts that Kevin and I learned of the passing of Iowa Senator Julian Garrett.
Julian was a friend who served our state with integrity, whether as a cattle farmer, a Little League coach, an attorney in the executive branch, or a legislator.
For 15 years, we worked together to unleash opportunities for the families we served, and his impact will be felt by generations to come.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
