Powerful statement by Ireland at the UN CPD. At a time of so much rollback on reproductive and bodily autonomy globally, it's great to see Ireland's strong commitment to sexual & reproductive health & rights, the SDGs and international human rights law reaffirmed at the UN #CPD59
🇮🇪 @IrelandAmbUN addressed the Commission on Population and Development #CPD59 Human rights and equality must remain at the centre of our efforts to ensure populations develop in an equitable and sustainable way. Regardless of context, women should be empowered to bear their desired number of children, free from coercion and with the support of their societies. When all members of society are healthy and empowered, growth and development is sustainable 🌎 🔗 bit.ly/IEatCPD59

Behind landmark constitutional law cases often lie brave litigants who risked a lot to bring their cases to court. So it was with Mary & Seamus McGee whose courageous case led to the legalisation of contraception in Ireland 51 years ago today. It was a privilege to meet them.

Great article by @MaryCarolanIT @IrishTimes today, shining a spotlight on Mrs McGee’s landmark case in 1973 which led to the legalisation of contraception in Ireland, discussed at the @TriCONDublin conference on ‘Contraception and the Constitution’ @TLRHub @TCDLawSchool

Dr Caitriona Henchion on the IFPA annual report in today's @IrishTimes: On FGM: Services are needed outside Dublin On abortion: The mandatory waiting period is unfounded in science - for some, it’s a relatively small inconvenience, but it prevents others from accessing care
Demand for a service to help women affected by female genital mutilation increased more than 300 per cent over two years, a new report has found. irishtimes.com/health/2024/1…

Providers of abortion care have a moral commitment to supporting autonomy and health. "People make the decision that is best for them. The more you hear it, the more you realise that people have really thought about what is best in this situation." #ReproductiveAutonomy #SRHR

We're delighted that Maeve Taylor, @IrishFPA's Director of Advocacy & Communications, will speak about abortion in Ireland pre- and post-repeal this afternoon at @ICNI2019's conference, Breaking the Walls of Silence. #SRHR #AbortionIsHealthcare
Next Tuesday we're hosting a conference to mark the 20th anniversary of FPA NI's victory in the Court of Appeal. The landmark ruling began to break the walls of silence that surrounded abortion and we'll be discussing its impact then and now with a range of excellent speakers.

🇵🇱 Breaking: The acquittal of three Polish women’s rights defenders from @strajkkobiet is a relief, but the trial was unjust. They were unfairly prosecuted for protesting against abortion restrictions. Defending reproductive rights is not a crime. More: bit.ly/4ercY40

Abortion law should ensure access to and guarantee reproductive rights, and support bodily autonomy. The O'Shea report recommended several changes to Irish abortion law. We call on policymakers & Oireachtas members to action them in this Dail term. #InternationalSafeAbortionDay

It's #WorldContraceptionDay! Our clinics have seen first-hand the success of the free contraception scheme. But many clients are excluded for no reason other than age. Extending the scheme further is critical - cost shouldn't be a barrier to contraception use for anyone.
