Thanks to @StatesideRadio for having me on today!
Tired of wearing masks? So were Americans a century ago, says @JAlexNav. He talked with us about mask fatigue--and the risk in a premature return to normalcy--during the influenza pandemic of 1918 and 1919: bit.ly/3lSbsgF

Thanks to @ConversationUS for allowing me to share how history can help inform the present.
People gave up on flu pandemic measures a century ago when they tired of them – and paid a price bit.ly/3sdrt3i

The Javelins that were finally sold to Ukraine came with the stipulation that they not be used against Russian forces. Trump is full of crap.
FWIW, “originalism” and “textualism” are just thin veneers for conservative judicial activism.

Trump had 3 years to replenish the supposed depleted national stockpile. Why didn’t he?

If the Trump admin’s supposed China travel ban was so effective, how is it that the US has one of the worst Covid pandemics in the world? I guess that policy didn’t work.

Melania saying “fuck Christmas” sure takes the wind out of the sails of those conservatives whining about holiday Starbucks cups.
In 1919, Woodrow Wilson contracted influenza during the third wave of the pandemic. Deathly ill and exhausted by the disease, he acceded to French demands to punish Germany for WWI. It was a major factor in the rise of Hitler. Putin will make the most of today’s situation.

Folks are focusing on Trump’s refusal to condemn white supremacists. But the real telling moment was when he whined about some supposed reverse racism in America and his orders to end racial sensitivity training. That tells you all you need to know about him and his supporters.

I’m pretty sure Pence has Mother cut his meat for him.

VP Mike Pence: "Sen. Kamala Harris said she would change the dietary guidelines of this country to reduce the amount of red meat that Americans can eat." Crowd boos. VP: "Well I've got some red meat for you: We're not going to let Joe Biden & Kamala Harris cut America's meat!"

Drove by the undergrad rental section of town yesterday and spotted lots of evidence of Saturday night house parties (red Solo cups everywhere, beer pong tables set up, etc.). I guess students didn't get the #COVID19 memo? Doesn't bode well for the upcoming semester…

Odds are overwhelming that this guy will contract COVID sometime in the next week.
Radical right-wing pastor Greg Locke is apoplectic after being told by the manager that he needs to wear a mask when getting his coffee at Dunkin Donuts.

She's not wrong. Unfortunately, these days you can either serve the American people or you can serve Trump. The two are sadly mutually exclusive. All too often, Birx has decided to serve Trump.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says that Dr. Deborah Birx has "enabled" President Trump: "I don't have confidence in anyone who stands there while the President says swallow Lysol and it's going to cure your virus" cnn.it/30lSxlm

I think this misses the main point: if the GOP can suppress in-person voting in Democratic precincts/cities while also suppressing mail-in voting, that definitely benefits Republicans. This is a two-part strategy. Added benefit is that Trump will cry foul when he loses.

There’s just no evidence that mail-in voting disproportionately benefits Democrats. bit.ly/3jOzdoq

The danger of @realDonaldTrump does not come from his autocratic tendencies or blatant corruption. It comes from his ability to whip his ignorant, authoritarianism-loving base into a lather. A base that includes the AG, DHS, and a feckless GOP full of weak-willed sycophants.

The president’s extraordinary proposal to delay the election, which he is not constitutionally empowered to enforce, represents what appears to be his first attempt at floating a suspension of the election, which is less than 100 days away politico.com/news/2020/07/30…
