Reports today say Labour MP Josh Simons is standing down from Makerfield so Andy Burnham can seek a route back into Parliament, with Burnham confirming he will request Labour NEC permission to stand. Andy Burnham has been one of the very few senior political voices to consistently acknowledge the devastating injustice faced by the 3.8 million UK taxpayers who were excluded from parity of Covid-19 financial support. He has joined #ExcludedUK livestreamed events, listened to those affected, challenged the lack of fairness, and raised the wider failures of Covid financial support at the Covid Inquiry. So today’s news that Josh Simons MP is stepping down to allow Andy Burnham the opportunity to seek a return to Parliament is significant. This is not about party politics. It is about whether the voices of the excluded, the bereaved, the broken, the still struggling and the never-compensated will finally be heard where decisions are made. For too long, our community has been ignored, dismissed and expected to simply disappear. We are still here...minus 40 who felt no other option but to take their own lives... and hundreds who attempted to. This is for the 3.8 million lives that were ignored. The freelancers and the self employed. The Conference are trying every trick to have this taken down…so I’ve just deployed large digital vans as well, to keep circling the area.

Today marks six years since the UK went into full lockdown. Six years on, most people want to believe the pandemic is long over. For thousands of excluded people, it is not over at all. They are still paying the price every single day. While 90% of the population received Covid support that did not have to be repaid, many excluded taxpayers were forced to survive by taking on Bounce Back Loans, maxing out overdrafts and running up credit card debt just to eat, keep their homes and try to save their businesses. That was not support. That was state-backed abandonment. Six years later, people are still trapped in debt from a national emergency they did not cause. Still losing businesses. Still losing homes. Still living with the mental and financial devastation of being shut out and left behind. They did everything this country asked of them. They worked hard. Paid taxes. Built businesses. Contributed for years. And when the country closed, they were denied meaningful help and told to borrow instead. The lockdown ended. The injustice did not. This is why ExcludedUK, together with the Gaps in Covid-19 Financial Support APPG, is still fighting for justice, because this is not a historic wrong that can be quietly forgotten. It is a live scandal that is still destroying lives now. Six years on, the debt remains. The damage remains. The fight remains. 3.8 Million UK taxpayers were excluded from parity of Covid-19 financial support, yet they were told they could not work or open their businesses. That is 10% of the UK workforce…equivalent to the population of Wales! Also, there were only an average of 500,000 job vacancies during the pandemic, (source data from the ONS) , so what were the other 3.3 Million of us supposed to do?!?!
