This might be the best ad for a train museum, ever. Just incredible.

Was told by a NPS employee this tree across from Lincoln’s home in Springfield IL is the last confirmed “witness tree” that would have been standing when Lincoln lived here and would have seen. Last night’s storm has destroyed it, staff say it can’t be saved #History #Lincoln

Do people know that they can now subscribe to The New York Times for free if they have a Chicago Public Library card? Go to the CPL website, go to the online resources page for newspapers, and they're touting near the top of the page. You just click a link, provide your library log-in information, and it creates a free NYT account for you. Sweet.

What a day. Today at the Vatican, I met Pope Leo XIV & presented him with a @IlliniFootball jersey: No. 14, "Leo" on the back. I never imagined there'd be a Southsider leading 1.4b Catholics around the world. Chicago shows up in the most unexpected places. Very grateful.

Starting a team in the @BananaBall_ league that does no trick plays but uses banana ball rules to our competitive advantage. 3-0 count? We're beaning the guy to avoid the ball four sprint. Putting all our bench players in the crowd to fight fans who catch our foul balls. We have great fundamentals. Grey jerseys, grey pants. Tucked in with high white socks. Caps on straight as an arrow. Old time baseball. The Shreveport Sickos are coming for you, Bananas.

CSX 8888, a freight train carrying hazardous phenol acid, runs away from Toledo to Kenton, Ohio. Nobody is injured, but it inspires a wild train chase unseen in Ohio since the 19th century.

60 years ago today: the White Heath operator hands up train orders to the conductor on an eastbound Illinois Central train, bound for Champaign. My favorite photo of all time, by one of the greatest rail photographers of all time.
Replying to @bigmoodenergy
Thank you for this, I never knew. Roger Puta is my favorite rail photographer of all time. As an Illinois alum like Puta, I’ve taken shots in many of the same places he has and hoped to be able to shoot half as well as he did. This will forever be my favorite photo of his:

Brightline under-reported truth in 3…2…1… The company has not had trouble attracting riders. March was its highest ridership month ever. It’s because it’s saddled with capital debit from building the operation. Debt that is assumed by the government for public passenger rail.
