💡THE IDEA: create a huge mixed batch of cells where each cell has a different gene switched off. Then scan through them under a microscope, looking for anything unusual and when you find it, mark it with a laser so you can pick it out later.
👎THE PROBLEM: the laser light was too intense meaning the tag was switching on and then immediately burned out.
👍THE FIX: turn down the laser power, reduce how long it lingers on each spot, and slightly blur the focus.
Simple tweaks but the result is cells that glow much more brightly and reliably helping scientists accurately track cells of interest.
