My heart sank as I read the news about #Navalny. I remember meeting him at an event in London much before he became the main opposition leader. He was humble, thoughtful, and laser-focused on his mission. The cruelty of #Putin's regime is hard to characterize in words.

I reckon I've seen 100 restaurants, bars or clubs shutter this Jan now (we are one week in). It's a bloodbath. That's on top of the 4500 that shut last year, the 1400 that shut in 2022. The vast majority of them independant. When will the government wake up to the fact that the lifeblood of the Hospitality sector is being lost under their noses. To be replaced by equity backed chains or empty buildings. I've got nothing against the chains, they have done well to get to where they are. But who's going to be the brand of tomorrow if we keep losing such great operators. Who is going to employ the people of tomorrow? Hospitality is asking for nothing more than a chance to be profitable. It will lead to growth, it will lead to employment and it will lead to increased tax returns. That's a fact. #cutvat #hospitality Sign āœļø change.org/p/lower-vat-to-10… Write āœļø ukhospitality.eaction.org.uk…

The New York Times just sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement for using its content to train ChatGPT. Some of the allegations are STUNNING! I read all 69 pages of the lawsuit, here are the most šŸ”„ parts:

Utility bills across Hospitality have been one of the main reasons for many closures and job losses this year. If this doesn’t make you angry, I don’t know what will.

The one single mechanism that 100% saved businesses and jobs, was when they reduced vat to 5/12.5%. That’s what we need back… That would stabilise the sector and allow breathing space. It would certainly save many smaller independent Hospitality businesses.

This is the one single mechanism that the entire industry is calling for. Reduce Hospitality VAT to 12.5%. Bring us in line with Europe. It’ll save both businesses and jobs. dailymail.co.uk/money/market…

We will never impose unnecessary and heavy-handed measures on you, the British people. We will still meet our international commitments and hit Net Zero by 2050.
Community note
Taxes on meat and flying had already been repeatedly ruled out by the Government. There is no proposal to require people to have seven bins, or for "compulsory" car sharing. The announced changes on insulation only stand to benefit private landlords. inews.co.uk/news/seven-rec…

Evening @RishiSunak My first restaurant was in 2011 & I’ve opened 6 since. I have an events unit & H.O so in total 9 sites all paying taxes & contributing millions to the economy. Crippling energy costs, covid loans & 20% VAT are killing me off. What do you suggest ? Thank you
