IAVCEI is saddened to learn that Hans-Ulrich Schmincke passed away on 24/08/24 at the age of 86. He was SG of IAVCEI between 1983-1991, and awarded the Thorarinsson medal in 1993. During his mandate, he revamped the publication model of BV, a legacy that we profit from today

Santorini is an example of a multi-cyclic caldera (a depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses) and its cycles are characterized by extended periods of effusive to mildly explosive volcanic activity between major caldera-forming events.
