Sheesh — Canvas (Instructure) just got hit with a major cyberattack. Looks like neither I nor my students will be getting much done today.

reviewes / opinions on getting claude code involved on the data cleaning piece? Feels high value but also worry about difficult-to-audit mistakes.

I could publish a paper in QJE tomorrow if Larry Katz allowed it.

I am increasingly convinced that, aside from data restrictions and computational constraints (as more papers rely on “universe” data), fully automated verification and routine robustness checks of empirical social science is achievable in the near future.🎆
1/🧵 A major update to our paper: "Scaling Reproducibility" w/ @YangYang_Leo. We move beyond reanalyzing a single design to (almost) full-paper replication! Paper: bit.ly/repro-ai

New preprint! We re-analyze 46 papers that use log-like specifications (ln(Z 1), inverse hyperbolic sine, etc). We find widespread non-robustness, and we show through theory simulation how these models drive spurious significance. 1/ doi.org/10.31222/osf.io/juda…

The NBER recession dates from before 1927 are fundamentally different from the modern dates. They measure something different (movements is output relative to trend). So, are not comparable with the post-1927 dates.
Question for Kevin Warsh’s confirmation hearing.

1/ 🚨 New tariffs are here. What did we learn from the last round? Our research (AER: Insights 2021) shows that tariffs on imports largely hit US firms—not foreign exporters. But front-running, trade diversion, and lower margins meant the impact on consumer prices was limited in the short run. 🧵

I never imagined a single week could so profoundly shift my perspective on my research area, but that's exactly what happened at this bootcamp. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my PhD: top researchers walked us through the literature such that we connect the dots.
Now live! Please send your best students to join us at the NBER Entrepreneurship Boot Camp this summer. The event is a wonderful way to join the field, and was a starting point for many of our academic journeys. Applications due Feb 15! @robinson_fuqua nber.org/calls-papers-and-pr…
