Important report from @isth SSC about the state of basic research in thrombosis & hemostasis. This figure is disturbing: clinical abstracts in gray; basic science in red. Thrombosis remains a leading cause of disability & death worldwide. Not good if basic science is contracting!

New article: TF pathway of blood #coagulation is complex network controlled by multiple feedback loops that coalesce around thrombin. Lakshmanan et al @OHSUNews predicts & experimentally validates that TFPI modifies the role of FXI in thrombin generation. bit.ly/39mCRoG

positive feedback of blood coagulation factor XI (#FXI) activation by thrombin can be abolished by selectively eliminating the inhibitory function of tissue factor pathway inhibitor (#TFPI) using a computational model in #Python.

This predication was experimentally validated using #thrombin generation assays with function blocking antibodies against TFPI and plasmas depleted of FXI. This work should serve as a template for predicting novel biochemical interactions in thrombosis and hemostasis
