To teach reading, start with the "basic" code: a single sound for each of the 26 letters (the short sound for the 5 vowels). Then immediately start blending to read simple CVC words like MAN, SIT, and PET.
The child will be reading in no time! There's really no mystery here.

4% Year 1 SA students not able to read any of the 40 words in the sample.1 in 25. 1 in every classroom, in my Home State.
I'm glad that SA was brave enough to gain this information. SA Speech Pathologists are trained and ready to play their part in helping address it.
