I refuse to pay Jalen Duren anything close to over $40 million a year right now. I’d rather let him test restricted free agency and see what his actual market value really is.
Because if the Detroit Pistons hand out a massive contract to Duren while also preparing for an eventual extension for Ausar Thompson, you risk becoming too top-heavy financially without having a true secondary scorer or playmaker next to Cade Cunningham.
That’s how teams get stuck — overpaying young talent based on potential instead of proven impact, then realizing too late the roster still doesn’t have enough shot creation or offensive balance to seriously compete.
