If anyone lives in Arizona and has time, there's a group that needs help curing ballots. This could mean the difference between gaining and losing the House
If you're in AZ and can spend today and/or Sunday curing ballots please email me: laura.jedeed@gmail.com
Thank you to all the speakers at the #NDiSTEM2024 / @SACNAS session on "Navigating STEM with a disability: Strategies for success". If you're a geoscience student who needs accessible options for field camps, I think applications for programs run by @BakingSodaVolc will open soon
Representing @UW at #NDiSTEM2024 of @SACNAS! If you’re an undergraduate, please check out summer research opportunities at @IMOD_STC and @UW_CEI, and apply to graduate school at @UWChemistry! Deadlines are coming up, and we'd love to receive your applications
ALT The image is a photograph of three smiling people in front of a purple sign that says “University of Washington, Department of Chemistry”.
On my way to @SACNAS for #2024NDiSTEM! 🤩 Excited to reconnect with peers and meet the future of STEM 🫶🏾
Join us at our NDiSTEM professional development panel on November 2nd!
If you see me around ask me about #BlackInBiophysics, graduate school at @uw_ntp, or just say hi 👋🏾
I love marking my ballot at home then mailing it or swinging by a ballot box. Thank you Washington State & King County elections for making it so easy to vote! My deep thanks to U.S. citizens who will be standing in lines because they have no other choice – I've done that too!
ALT The image is a photograph of an outstretched hand inserting a ballot into a blue and white ballot box that says "vote!". The ballot is in a secure red envelope. At the left of the photo are the handlebars of a bicycle.
There are many ways to encourage other Americans to vote on November 5th and to help our democracy represent more of its people. For example, you can join me in writing letters through Vote Forward (votefwd.org/). Letters should be sent by Oct 29, so check it out soon!
ALT The image is a photo of a stack of form letters and envelopes. The form letter says "Soon, you'll have the chance to vote in important elections that are coming up on November 5, 2024. Are you ready to vote? I vote because" and then there is a blank for the letter-writer to fill in.
Hey @UW friends - the Combined Fund Drive (give.wa.gov/mycfd) has started! Want to donate directly to @UWChemistry? So easy! I just did. Also to @voicesofnw_ea, the featured charity. In the 1st week, increasing a donation by $5, gets you a $5 coffee card (so very Seattle)
What can be a better 🎁.Today I was gifted Biophysical Journal's hard copy by my super nice advisor @sm_aurelia where my article got published. The beautiful cover art design is by the scientist I admire most @KayTrue is the added happiness. Shout out to all postdoc advisors 🙌
I don't know which of the many kind people in @UWChemistry posted these thoughtful notes on the doors of our main lecture hall to encourage @UW students during their exams last term. Whoever you are, you are wonderful, and I am so glad to work with you.
ALT The image is a composite of four photographs. Each photo has a pink post-it note with red handwriting on a grey door. The first post-it note says, “Proud that you made it this far. You can & will do amazing!” and has a smiley face. The second says, “Believe in yourself. Don’t Panic. You know your best & do what u can!” The third says, “Don’t Panic. Think calm & give it your best & you’ll do great!” and has a smiley face. The fourth says, “You are more than capable! If things don’t go as planned don’t worry & try again.”

Mid-career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics or astrophysics with interest in leadership should apply by Nov. 1 for 2025 Academic Leadership Workshop, to be held Feb. 20-22, 2025, at Johns Hopkins. Supported by a #CottrellScholars Collaborative award. bit.ly/3Nk2Qhz
A great paper to start with is journals.aps.org/prl/abstrac…, which uses statistical physics to describe the shape of your ponytail, though not the length at which each strand will break. This paper won @goldlabUC an Ig Nobel prize. Maybe one of these prizes is in your future too!
Can polymer science be used to understand human hair length equilibrium? At certain length, the probability of hair growth is lower than hair breaking🤔. I want answers. #polymer#beauty what paper should I read?
The beautiful @UW campus is ready to welcome students for the start of the autumn term. I'm double-ready this year with updated covid and influenza vaccine boosters
ALT The photo shows a smiling professor on the lawn of Rainier Vista at the University of Washington in Seattle. The sun is shining, the sky is blue with wispy clouds, the trees and grass are bright green... it is a perfect day, really. The professor is wearing glasses, a sleeveless shirt, a purple sweater over her shoulders, and two red band-aids on her left arm, one where she got a covid vaccination booster and one where she got an influenza vaccine booster. In the background is a white column of water from Drumheller Fountain, and some buildings of upper campus.
Could be! We referenced your preprint: "Additional applications might lie in engineering minimal cell systems to function with only two classes of lipids (41); if one of those classes were a sterol–lipid, it would be interesting to test whether the cell membrane phase-separates"
I'm a fan of the Food Pantry Challenge the Univ of Washington & Washington State Univ are holding until Sept 14. Every donation (any size) counts as a gift. The university w/ the most gifts will be honored at the Apple Cup game. You can donate at together.uw.edu/Campaign/fig… (I did!)
Hi, @WallaceUCSF and @MaryMirvis! Hope you're well! This is beautiful work. I'm assuming this cell is in late log stage (not stat phase)?
(@Merz - I thought you'd be interested too)
nope. the dimples aren't created by ANY membrane-bending molecule. they are created by physical packing interactions with lipid droplets (shown here in yellow) which indent the vacuole surface. makes you wonder how much of organelle shape comes from packing! stay tuned!
