When Lina Khan and Mamdani talked about doing this a thousand bored economists and neoliberal bloggers went nuts
Hot dogs are still $2 in Atlanta for the World Cup. It’s basically a $1.5 billion Costco.

Sports betting is a scourge. Legalization reduced food sufficiency by 2.1% among working-age adults without a college degree, especially during the NFL season. That translates into an estimated 284,000 additional food-insufficient households in 9 states.

PM Carney on combatting surveillance pricing: We made the commitment in the AI strategy that we're going to protect your data. And this is part of protecting your data and how your data is used. Surveillance pricing is an example of using data in a way that can be adverse to the interests of Canadians.

Always appreciate folks being straightforward
Was struck by @Jason’s blunt assessment that the tech CEOs would be happy with a pure oligarchy.

Glad to see this case moving forward. These property controls and the power they give incumbents grocers to shape competition needs to come under the spotlight.

Funny how we've had discounts for centuries before surveillance pricing was even a dream, and yet now they're somehow at risk because retailers may not be able to rip people off even more. Give me a break.

Major benefit of hydropower from Quebec: "That additional power from the transmission line helps avoid running fossil fuel-powered peaker plants, which are more expensive and can harm the local air quality in the city. Those plants run when demand for power soars in the summer."
The completed Champlain Hudson Power Express brings a significant influx of cleaner energy to the city’s electric grid, which is mostly powered by fossil fuels. buff.ly/CcZFfNi

Good to see the link between privacy protection and surveillance pricing made in Canada's AI strategy. Feds and the provinces both have a role in fair pricing.

The threat isn't AI - it's three companies owning AI. The answer isn't to freeze it or nationalize it. It's to break it open so 10,000 startups can build on it.
Artificial Intelligence is built on the creative work of millions of writers, artists, musicians, journalists, teachers, scientists and ordinary people. That work has been stolen by Big Tech oligarchs. Now's the time to reclaim it and ensure AI works for ALL, not just the few.

I wonder if its time for the U.S. to set up a Department for Agriculture
Screwworms coming back into the U.S. cattle herd/stock is going to potentially devastate the industry and jack up meat prices. Worst part is, this was preventable. Trump & DOGE pushed funding cuts on/destroyed agencies that were directly responsible for fighting this pest

Really excited about our new report on Competition and the Cloud. There are no easy solutions to this problem, but there are tools at our disposal to increase agency for the public and private sector.
Canada's compute market is dominated by American hyperscalers, risking competition and sovereignty. But swapping foreign monopolies for domestic ones is no solution. Check out CAMP's new report, Parting Clouds, on what the right path forward looks like antimonopoly.ca/parting-clou…

"A monopoly is a mini-dictator over an industry. And if you have enough mini-dictators over industries, then you stop living in a free society." @matthewstoller explains why monopolies aren't just an economic problem -- they're an alternative and antidemocratic political system.
