China passed peak gasoline diesel sales more than a year ago. Right now they're on the peak demand plateau. That will soon become a secular decline.
Nevermind about China's EVs, look at its ICE sales😮 May -39% y-o-y Just 560,000 sold, compared to 2,660,000 peak almost ten years ago in Dec-2016.

Been writing a few pieces about the commiditized stack and why we should shape the cloud market to be more like a utility. Have a new piece out in @ForeignPolicy about why this is critical to NATO. NATO’s Digital Back End Could Fall Apart Without Change foreignpolicy.com/2026/06/09…

Really excited about our new report on Competition and the Cloud. There are no easy solutions to this problem, but there are tools at our disposal to increase agency for the public and private sector.
Canada's compute market is dominated by American hyperscalers, risking competition and sovereignty. But swapping foreign monopolies for domestic ones is no solution. Check out CAMP's new report, Parting Clouds, on what the right path forward looks like antimonopoly.ca/parting-clou…

Maybe Peter Thiel just doesn’t react well to sunlight?
JD Vance just ended his presidential exploratory election committee. Now, his mentor, Peter Thiel, has fled the U.S., for right wing Argentina. But not before declaring that he might have overstated AI’s impact on society, particularly on employment. Something bad is happening.

✍️ Digital ID, payments, & data exchange should be treated as public infrastructure, not siloed IT projects. @daeaves, @DianeCoyle1859, & @2biavas argue governments must build shared digital foundations to avoid fragmentation. 🔗 Read their article here: buff.ly/bo9FpiL

Different AI worldviews are driving different AI policies and strategies. It's making international alignment harder. I'm also worried that its causing countries to build strategies on where they *hope* AI is going, not where it is.

I have developed a browser application to load, display, modify and analyze Statistics Canada tables. I believe it is superior to the agency's own app which is slow, limited and dated. Please give it a try at: philipsmith.ca/tabler

Excited to have this new piece on AI and geopolitics in Foreign Policy!
The underlying divergences in different countries’ definitions of AI make it difficult to develop a shared agenda or set of priorities worth tackling, write @saroshnagar and @daeaves. foreignpolicy.com/2026/05/11…

One reason getting international alignment on AI is hard is because countries are imagining, or hoping for, different futures.
Governments around the world disagree sharply on the speed and scale of the transformation that AI might induce. foreignpolicy.com/2026/05/11…
