New preprint from @Loolibear ! Leah looked into bedaquiline (BDQ) resistance in Mtb in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and then more widely in S Africa. In brief, she found repeated evolution of resistance by disruption (FS, nonsense, IS-element!) of mmpR5 biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

When is it suitable to stop long-term treatment of Takayasu autoimmune vasculitis? @R_maughan & colleagues at @ImperialNHLI outline the importance of stratifying patients in this cohort & the factors to consider when deciding if it is safe to stop treatment. #Takayasu #autoimmune
Although the ACR and EULAR have introduced guidelines for initial treatment of #TakayasuArteritis, Robert Maughan, explains that there is little to no data available to guide decisions on whether treatment can be safely stopped. ow.ly/ms8050LMtEy

New paper led by @mbhall88 and collaborators! Evaluating @nanopore as a replacement/complement for Illumina for TB: drug resistance and clustering. Spoiler: you can get equivalent clustering and identical resistant predictions (with 30x depth). 1/n medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Feeling well but I have a confirmation mass, family dinner and a rugby match coming up. Going to the gym too. 3 of these 4 activities are currently high-risk profile activities so I’m #antigen testing twice this week. What are you planning this weekend? #COVID19

In our functional annotation update (doi.org/10.1128/mSystems.006…) we focus on 1,725 genes in the virulent M. tuberculosis type strain H37Rv reference genome that were underannotated on Mycobrowser/TubercuList. We considered genes underannotated if they met any of 4 criteria: (1/7)

@nrt_thomson and I v proud to see this herculean labour of love by @GraceBlackwel1 published in @PLOSBiology ! A hugely valuable dataset for studying bacterial evolution and for public health. Great leadership from Grace, and teamwork from @martibartfast @KerrMalone @GalHoresh.
Excited to announce that the 661K resource is now live at Plos Biology @PLOSBiology journals.plos.org/plosbiolog… We uniformly assembled, ran quality control and performed general characterisation on 661,405 bacterial genomes that were in the ENA at the end of November 2018.
