Every time you load a page, your data travels through physical infrastructure - cables under oceans, satellites overhead, fiber under cities. Most people never think about. That's why I decided to map it. This is Project Backbone. It's free, interactive, and live.

Lot of great content on the Chairman’s twitter today, but this is particularly notable. Retiring outdated, expensive, and toxic copper lines and replacing them with fiber, fixed wireless, and in some cases, satellite broadband (think there was some other news on this today…) is a big win for American consumers, particularly those in rural areas. While there’s great progress in Ohio, there are still places where service is delivered over fiber, delivering a sub-par service to consumers at higher cost to firms, further diverting capital away from upgrading this infrastructure. The @FCC has taken steps to promulgate rules to speed this transition. Just another example of the great work being done by @BrendanCarrFCC and @OliviaTrustyFCC.
Across Ohio, families are getting an upgrade from old and slow copper lines to high-speed Internet — thanks to President Trump’s policies. Great to join Congressman @RepDaveJoyce in Cortland, Ohio today as crews were stringing new fiber Internet lines.

New from me: A look at Richland Parish's finances, where teachers are getting $50,000 bonus checks and the parish just got a $22.4 million tax payment from Meta The company is building its massive data center nearby and the local economy is getting a windfall. But will it last?

Everyone always talking about “talent density” in Silicon Valley when we really should be talking about how 80% of pretzels in America come from a small region of Pennsylvania

In 1941, radio stations stopped playing a lot of popular music. Why? A fight over copyright fees. The result was completely unexpected: radio suddenly turned to R&B, country music, and public-domain songs. One copyright dispute helped reshape American music. 🎧 Listen to @vpostrel @CharlesCMann @johnachardin on our new podcast - Everyday Abundance!

The most American hopecore content out there. We should start a fellowship to bring euros to America so they can see it for themselves and write about it. Tocqueville Fellowship?
We found another surreal place on our way. I know some people will say I’m too positive about everything I see, but this place was crazy. They had a shooting range in the store.

I know why this is the arc, because this is the midcurve Sorkin take on reality. A much more interesting film would be catching up with the early Facebookers and see what they're doing now: -the lifer VP who doesn't know what else to do in life -the mediocrity working on some flailing vanity startup to prove he was good and not just lucky -the Marin/Hillsborough guy with a rolling fund who 'invests' randomly and mostly just kitesurfs and heliskis while Cybertrucking his kids around to private schools The banality of wealth, the stasis of technocapitalist post-History. Much more interesting than this midwit crusading bullshit (though I guess there are certainly a few examples of this).
First trailer for ‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK’ sequel, starring Jeremy Strong, Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison. The film follows an engineer who becomes a whistleblower on Facebook's most guarded secrets. In theaters on October 9.

👊🇺🇸🔥 Tradespeople are the most under-appreciated piece of the digital economy. Awesome to see more investment moving that direction.
High-tech needs skilled tradesmen. A new program will pay workers as they train and promise them jobs building new digital infrastructure, write @DinaPowellMcC and @mikeroweworks on.wsj.com/4e9V3zB

And there we have it. Innolight made it onto the list of companies affiliated with the People's Liberation Army. Team Telecom is rightly looking long and hard at this and other transceiver companies. Expect more investigations and more bans to come.
Optical transceivers are the next focus in continuing efforts to secure America’s digital infrastructure. But @DeptofWar should take this one slowly and methodically. New from me in The SCIF:

There is only one solution to this problem: we must arm the waymos
PSA: Do not open your windows in Waymos. I was assaulted and robbed in a Waymo in the Mission District. I was punched three times in the face and head. Waymo treats criminals as pedestrians and stops moving, leaving you vulnerable. They gave me 5 free rides tho

No one would be getting “exposure to private companies before they go public.” They’re just betting on something that has nothing to do with the company. Shocked to see the people who missed earnings by 4,000% try to confuse retail investors into a smoke-and-mirrors asset…
Pre-IPO perps are great to get exposure to private companies before they go public (outside the U.S. only for now) and to help with price discovery. Now on Coinbase with SpaceX as our first listing.

One of Lee Kuan Yew’s most consequential decisions was to keep Common Law out of sheer pragmatism. It forces political discipline and restraint, and restraint is what persuades the world's capital to come pouring in and stay.
