ALT We have started a multi-phase operation to facilitate the release and transfer of hostages and detainees as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The complex operation, which takes place at the request of the parties, is crucial to reuniting separated families. The ICRC’s role in this operation is that of a neutral intermediary, and is strictly humanitarian. The parties to the conflict determined the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including the individuals to be released and the timeline; the ICRC was not involved in the negotiations. It is the responsibility of the parties to the agreement to ensure these operations are conducted safely and with dignity.

Excellent conversations at the #GCF2025 here in #Riyadh over the last two days on how #IHL protect civilians and infrastructure against cyber operations, and how the #DigitalEmblem project we are leading can help hospitals being spared from digital harm.
From Riyadh at the @gcfriyadh , we’re putting the humanitarian perspective at the heart of cyber debates. As warfare goes digital, attacks on hospitals, water, and power threaten civilians first. The ICRC is here to push for rules, partnerships, and solutions that protect people — not just systems.

Last year, Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa, and the ICRC launched the Global Initiative on humanitarian law. They now call to end IHL violations and announce their plan to hold a 2026 high-level meeting to uphold humanity in war.
