Initial data (late 2020/early 2021 trials early real-world studies on the original strain) showed the mRNA vaccines were highly effective at preventing infection - what we hoped would be sterilizing immunity for that strain at that time, with strong signals of reduced transmission. Also, I never supported mandates for the general public or non-medical/military personnel. For healthcare workers & military (who take an oath to protect others), it was about fulfilling that duty to vulnerable patients/comrades when data suggested they could spread less. Public health policy requires nuance and trade-offs - not gotchas or absolutes. That’s the teachable moment. 👍🏽

I agree with you- to an extent. And here’s the nuance: Half of covid cases turned out to be asymptomatic. Which means half of the “sick” people thought they “healthy,” and your own acknowledgement, should’ve been isolated (you don’t quarantine sick people btw). The problem wasn’t the policy- it was the lack of knowledge about viral spread plus lack of testing.

I have said repeatedly I was against mandates for children, and non essential/ high risk (eg medical workers who can expose others). That said, the initial vaccine data showed it to be in fact highly effective against transmission of the initial strains, so while I wouldn’t have gone that route (or the let er rip route of other places, that also caused much harm), I can understand in hindsight why some went that route to try and reopen society.

Here’s what people don’t understand about that. Without confirmation of a positive test, or antibody testing, we have no clue if you actually had Covid or something else. Further, the entire reason we do efficacy testing on vaccines is to be able to say with some degree of certainty that if you get a particular dose of exposure via vaccine, you have high percentage likelihood of protection. We have no way of knowing if your mildly positive home covid test (or your cough and sore throat) produced a protective level of immunity. So even if you believe infections can induce future immunity- and I do- it’s still not appropriate or equivalent as a medical / scientific decision to endorse or accept it as proof of likely immunity to the extent that we do so with vaccines.

🚨 We’re in a teachable moment - and we’re blowing it. The same voices who said “no mandates” and “we will not comply” are suddenly fine with hantavirus quarantines and Ebola travel bans. This proves: people support public health measures… when they feel threatened by someone else’s “freedom.” So let’s have some real, nuanced conversation about the value of public health measures (including “mandates”) vs individual freedom trade offs, instead of mindlessly repeating “we will not comply,” or conversely denying that many covid measures in fact went too far…
