Surely you have heard of/ used novel object paradigms to assess animal personality? In this paper we validate exploration behavior through a battery of stimuli in both social and individual conditions and across a longer period of time. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Despite a longstanding scientific rumor, girls are not more socially-attuned at birth. Our systematic review and meta‐analyses found no #gender difference in neonates' social perception or discrimination onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

There is some data here timeshighereducation.com/new… "University of Central Lancashire paid £10.5 million to 264 employees". So average payout £40k Just the average, so some higher (p'haps much higher) Looks like range of £20 k to £60k might be usual, depending on job, service
Question for UK academics: how much is/was your institution offering for voluntary severance? One claimed "up to nine months gross basic pay for colleagues with two or more years’ service [was] among the most generous in the sector" but I hear another offered 15 months.

✨My essay in @TheLancet this week has made the front page!✨ (I didn’t know about this 🤗) ‘Reflect, Collaborate and Listen’ looks at why doctors don’t listen and the urgent need to rebalance the power dynamic in the patient - doctor relationship. thelancet.com/journals/lance…

This is what should be on every front page right now. What's happening in the US right now is an illegal power grab by a private citizen. IT'S A COUP. It's a digital coup. It's Musk who's leading it. The consequences are terrifying. And it's coming for us next. 1/

Re-upping this. The indirect cost rate cut is step 1 to defund American science. This is not the time for nuance. Steps 2-4 include shelving NIH (via state block grants), defunding unis (tax endowments, remove non profit status). If efficiency was the goal, DoD would be first 🎯
Lots of discussion about NIH/NSF funding and ‘fixing’ it - many good ideas. Right now - I think this is somewhat missing the political situation. We are in a fight at the level of ‘values’ - do we as a country value science and innovation? (1/3)

it's very common for deeply dysfunctional employers to staff extremely young because anyone more experienced will see right through their bullshit
The obvious corruption aside, why are Elon’s cronies all like 20 year old college kids? You’d think the world’s richest man would have a more seasoned pack of henchmen?

It seems suboptimal that the people who regulate education really hate universities
“Almost three quarters of universities in England will face financial problems next year - despite tuition fees increasing.” The sector is at crisis point. buff.ly/3CvUWzu

It was a good theory: That calling Elon "President Musk" would get under Trump's famously thin skin, causing division. But it's not working. I have a theory why — and it helps explain why Republicans in Congress are okay with giving up power, too. salon.com/2025/02/07/why-the…

Forst foil of the year. Honkiebonkie time
Replying to @Bad_Babette
Poppy experienced her first Easter in 2020. The foil wrappers from Easter eggs became her number one toy. To this date when she hears the sound of foil she will come running. Every Easter we collect a ziplock bag full of wrappers so that we can ration them out for the year.
