Our research in the fly, suggests that the Ana1 adopts different structures for each of these processes. We show this by generating different variant proteins that could restore centriole duplication to ana1 mutants, but not centriole elongation required to make flagellae. [2/3]

This predicts that the counterpart protein functions the same way in human cells and may have relevance to human cancer, where centriole duplication goes out of control. [3/3]

We are very sad to hear of the passing of Adelaide Carpenter, who had been in Genetics at Cambridge for over 30 years working mainly in our lab. A former full professor at UCSD, Adelaide came to Cambridge on sabbatical and never returned.  Continued below...

Adelaide was a world expert in Drosophila meiosis and the best fly geneticist in the Department. She left a technician’s position in the Ashburner lab to join us as research associate and made pioneering contributions to our genetic studies of Greatwall kinase and its substrates

📢 ** New Paper Alert** We show that centriole 9-fold microtubule symmetry is not essential for centriole elongation, correct distribution of the centriole’s components along its length, and in initiating aspects of centriole duplication. @NatureComms nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

I have a new parthenogenesis paper with @LabGlover! We found that aneuploidy arises during development in natural Drosophila parthenogens and our genetically induced parthenogens @HeredityJournal doi.org/10.1038/s41437-023-0…

Pallavi Panda broke my heart @centrosomes2023 by showing that centrioles work just fine even without their beautiful nine-fold symmetry. duplication. MT organisation. No pb. of course we all want to know what happens to cilia ... !

**New Paper**
I am excited to share the final version of our work on the genetic basis of virgin birth (parthenogenesis) in fruit flies! It was a joy working with @DK_Fabian @erikgarrison @LabGlover on this understudied phenomenon. cell.com/current-biology/ful…

Prepare to be amazed: some parthenogenetic flies reproduce as larvae and the offspring burst forth from their mother in a sci-fi-worthy spectacle! 🪰👽 That and other fly facts in our review @labglover #Parthenogenesis #AlienInspired #Entomology

Happy #FluorescenceFriday! This is a captivating image from @Levente87 @LabGlover @Caltech. Their work discusses the evolutionary conservation of Gorab (trans-Golgi) and the divergence of binding partner Sas6 (inner core procentriole). 📖 @BiologyOpen: doi.org/10.1242/bio.059545

Farewell to our fabulous summer students, Hanna & Buraq! Happy that they had an enriching Summer in the lab exploring centrosomes/cilia, as much as we enjoyed their curious, youthful spirit!
