The 4th UN General Assembly Declaration on
#NCDs and
#mentalhealth officially recognizes dementia as a global public health priority. The challenge now is moving from rhetoric to action.
To truly integrate
#dementia prevention into health systems, a focus on upstream, population-level strategies that do not rely solely on individual responsibility is essential.
Here are three measurable opportunities
@TheLancetPH to make this a reality:
🧠 Integrate, don't isolate
Mainstream dementia risk reduction into existing NCD and Universal Health Coverage
#UHC strategies. This requires financed plans with clear indicators that prioritize low-agency, scalable measures to avoid widening health inequities.
🫀 Go beyond cardiometabolic health
While heart
#health is key, effective dementia prevention demands focus on often-underrepresented areas like education access,
#brain injury prevention, and hearing loss management to ensure a truly comprehensive NCD approach.
📊 Close the accountability gap
With only 26% of countries having a national dementia plan, interoperable surveillance systems are needed. By 2030, at least 80% of countries should track dementia-specific indicators (disaggregated by equity factors) to ensure delivery matches commitment.
