On behalf of CUPE Local 416 and the first responders we represent, we are devastated by the tragic loss of Toronto Police Service Constable Marc Pinizzotto, who was killed in the line of duty during a police operation in North York today. Today, our entire first responder community mourns alongside the Pinizzotto family, his friends, colleagues, and all members of the Toronto Police Service. Every day, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and other emergency personnel put themselves in harm's way to protect our communities. The sacrifice made today is a painful reminder of the risks they face in service to others. As union members and fellow first responders, we understand the profound bond that exists among those who answer the call in moments of crisis. When one of us falls, all of us feel the loss. We extend our deepest condolences to Constable Pinizzotto's loved ones and to every member of the Toronto Police Service grieving this unimaginable tragedy. We also hold in our thoughts all first responders and frontline personnel affected by today's events.

Risk assessments should include the people who actually do the work. As @waltonmom rightly points out, workers know what makes a job safe, what makes it unsafe, and what needs to change. Listen here: local416.ca/left-looking-in/ #DayOfMourning #NotOneMoreWorker @oflabour

The members of CUPE Local 416 are proud to see the impact of our Not One More Worker campaign reflected in the City of Toronto’s official proclamation of Safety and Health Week. As outlined in the City’s May 4, 2026 communication and proclamation, @MayorOliviaChow and Toronto City Council have formally recognized the importance of preventing workplace injuries and illnesses, and the shared responsibility to keep workers safe. This recognition is the result of sustained advocacy by workers who know firsthand the risks that exist across municipal jobs every day. Through the Not One More Worker campaign, Local 416 has been working alongside the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to drive a culture shift in workplace safety.  This includes advancing third-party risk assessments across municipalities, strengthening safety standards, and re-examining how work is performed to better protect workers. We will continue pushing for stronger protections, better enforcement, and meaningful change, because even one injury or death, is one too many. #NotOneMoreWorker #StrongerTogether

CUPE 416 Health and Safety Lead Carmine Fiore states it plainly: we can’t keep waiting for someone to get hurt before acting. Enforcement should prevent incidents, not just respond to them. More on Left Looking In: local416.ca/left-looking-in/ #DayOfMourning #NotOneMoreWorker

Worker deaths don’t happen in isolation. They impact families, coworkers, entire communities. This isn’t one #workplace. It’s a system that isn’t keeping workers safe. That’s why we’re fighting for #NotOneMoreWorker Full episode here: local416.ca/left-looking-in/

On the National Day of Mourning, Toronto Civic Employees Union Local 416 was proud to convene a meeting with Minister David Piccini @DavidPiccini, Mayor Olivia Chow @MayorOliviaChow, and department staff from the city and the province on #workplacesafety. Ensuring workers have access to important health and safety benefits, by expanding and strengthening protections if they become ill on the job, is key in making sure workers have the tools they need to do their jobs. Local 416 has been working on improving health and safety at the municipal and provincial level with our Not One More Worker campaign and we’re so encouraged that leadership at both the provincial and city levels stand ready to work with us to make things better for workers in Toronto and across Ontario. For more information on our campaign to address workplace injuries in Ontario read here: local416.ca/not-one-more-wor…
