This is a class we should all want to take. And Annie will bring this spirit to the C.S. Lewis Studies Certificate.
"Every Dante needs a Virgil, a guide to the cosmos and the Great Tradition. In the postmodern age, C.S. Lewis is that guide—our British Boethius."
Student summary of our Ancients class 🥹:
"My mom asked me what I thought was the most important thing I learned this year in Manna I with you.
So I thought about it for a couple minutes, and I thought back to all the values that have been reflected upon in these stories—how in Homer, Xenia and Kleos were both heavily reflected upon as values, how Virgil showcased the value of hubris in his culture, how Socrates showed his value for the truth and justice and Aristotle seemed to seek out happiness.
Yet all these things that all these people valued really didn’t seem to make any of them a flawless person I would follow. In fact, some of the people reflected in the stories seemed to become even a bit worse when trying to uphold the value.
I really only saw the only person that was truly flawless was Jesus. I pondered our discussion regarding our Telos as Christians being to follow in Christ’s footsteps; I think the most valuable take away and application to pursue at the conclusion of the year in your class is this: our worldly values will change constantly; but they will never make us as perfect as we hope they will. Only following Jesus, walking like him, and pursuing his values will truly help us achieve our Telos."
This is what it's all about, y'all. Education as discipleship.
