Incredibly sad to hear that Tamara has passed away. Her knowledge on atmospheric physics was second to none and the vast majority of the stuff I talk about, AAM, MJO, wind-flow budgets etc is because she was kind enough to spend some time teaching me and answering my, probably rather stupid, questions with genuine patience and kindness. She was a wonderful person and I wish I could have gotten to know her more than I did. R.IP Tamara, thank you for everything.

I do find it very strange that people are allowed to have their say on summer predictions & forecast, often these are wildly exaggerated with talk of high 30c even 40c which largely go unchallenged & most are respectful to their thoughts, yet cold is mentioned in er winter! and you would think someone’s been murdered !, what I find very strange that a mild winter in the uk will likely bring heavy winds which lead to power cuts , flooding which devastates communities & farmland, mild temperatures which plays havoc with nature it does make me wonder if some of the mild lovers actually have any brain cells , then we have the lack of sunlight which impacts mental health, I appreciate not everyone wants cold but I certainly don’t want the above.

Nostalgia time! 1982 January 7th, central southern England and parts of Wales got blitzed by snow which lasted around 36hrs! 2ft of snow for some parts with up to 6metre drifts! Braemar recorded -27.2C around this time and Telford not far from me went down to -26.1C on the 10th! Look at the NH profile, there’s a separation of the PV with a build of heights towards Greenland, some would say look at those Iberian heights to the South and say they this could be a spoiler, they are quite far North. Yes I remember this as I was a kid playing with my remote control 4by4 jeep on the garden at the time!! I’ll be interested to see the updated ECM MJO plots as last nights was strong phase 7 moving towards 8! This would potentially bring strong blocking potential. Tonight’s PV Zonal winds again reverse which mean the Wind PV significantly weakens! Does it split! Or does it become stretched and displaced? Either way it’s seriously stressed! I wouldn’t take to much notice of these graphs showing a return to normal later next month as climatic norm will very often be an influence! The potential for proper winter 🥶 s there next month so for now we good our breaths a little longer and wait for potential fallout! Ok folks I’m on a roll! I’ve been asked what I would choose between the big freeze of January 1987 and the Beast from the East February 2018? Both extreme, no doubt about it! 2018 brought the perfect PV split while this wasn’t evident in 1987! The PV kind of migrates North in 87 and heights build towards the North and NE, 2018 the PV falls apart and those freezing cold uppers coming flooding in! Perhaps similar upper air temps but 2018 landed very late February! So if I had to chose I would say most definitely if 2018 would have a landed a month earlier it would have packed even more punch than 87! If the sypnotics are right we can still manage the extremes! Congratulations folks we are into negative territory with these zonal winds. Not only that but the significant weakening is not short lived and there’s a lot of noise to keep that Polar Vortex very weak! For me this is our best shot of a proper winter in many years! At first sight you would say the pattern looks ugly! But so many ensembles have a very weak and disorganised PV. You see the heights drain away from central and SE Europe but the PV is no big player here at all! What does that mean? It’s not really driving a fluent weather pattern and especially a zonal West to East mobile pattern across the UK!
