This is great, but I'm bummed Chicago didn't get NYC Bus's vehicle vaporizing technology. It'd really help move the buses faster. Maybe they can get it eventually.
A city program that automatically tickets drivers parked in downtown bike and bus lanes kicked off Monday, over a year after the City Council approved the pilot program, which uses camera mounts on city vehicles. trib.al/hjkSzwG

We need bollards everywhere.
Sadly, even the families of rock stars like Billy Corgan aren’t immune to Chicagoland traffic violence. His mother-in-law was injured when a driver crashed into Corgan's Highland Park tea house while she was eating there with his son. chi.streetsblog.org/2024/10/…

a key thing you need to know in order to understand illinois is most people agree there are too many local governments which creates inefficiencies, corruption, etc. & at the same time if you suggest merging the average illinoisan’s community with another they’ll try to kill you
if you’ve never seen the map of every chicago suburb in illinois with its own local government before, prepare to be shocked

There’s currently an actual ballet happening in Gallagher Way outside of Wrigley right now. You truly never know what you’re going to come across around here.

Well concerts famously don't end at predictable times on pre-scheduled days. How would the CTA know there'd be high demand for transit at this time?

What's ridiculous is the Vance is the Jr senator of a state that has a lot of historically underpopulated cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, & Youngstown. Maybe the gov't could incentivize people to move back to existing cities with extra space!
I love Vance saying Trump’s gonna solve the housing crisis by building homes on federal land. You’re not gonna solve the housing crisis in major cities when the majority of federal land is in the middle of nowhere.

Odds of a child getting kidnapped are ~1 in a million. Odds of a child born in 2021 dying in a traffic crash are ~1 in 93. Parents act like these stats are reversed. Paranoid about rare kidnappings and naive about the common driving. (Natl Safety Council tracks this stuff)

There's been talk of demolishing the McCormick Place Lakeside Center, East Building forever. If it finally happens, it'd be an excellent location for festival grounds. Imagine having actual bathrooms and real concessions stands, and not destroying a bunch of grass!

Chicago needs a permanent festival ground. All these events are ruining the grass in parks for months and months. Parks aren't built for concerts like this.
Day 11 in year 9 of Riot Fest’s desecration of our park. While attendees and Riot Fest boosters claim, “it’s only a weekend!” We know the damage lasts much longer than that.

The uncomfortable truth is that any large project, good or bad, requires some eminent domain. That's definitely the case with High Speed Rail, the same as it was with interstates.

To me, the ultimate point of a speed camera is to eventually no longer be necessary. That's why the revenue should go directly into fixing the street, not into the general fund.
I think speed cameras are good overall, but if the money isn't going towards traffic calming and safety, then people are going to feel like they're just money making operations.

In the 75 days since the speed camera at 10540 S Western Ave was installed in late May, it's issued a mind-boggling 59,152 tickets. That's over 46 an hour! The peak was on 6/9, when it caught 1352 speeders. Or 1.3 a minute. But what do you expect when the road looks like this?

On Western Ave, CDOT has had some pedestrian islands and bump-outs between 103rd and 115th & that's a great start, but they need to do more in the neighborhood of the speed camera itself.

My latest for @BlockClubCHI (with great photos by @colinbphoto) is a portrait of one Chicago high school — and how a teacher shortage, school politics and a lack of funding is having a detrimental impact on student learning blockclubchicago.org/2024/09…
