“What stands in the way becomes the way.” – Marcus Aurelius
Turn obstacles into opportunities for growth and success.
Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
This is what it delivered for my client, Yves, on race day:
OBSTACLES
1. Storm on race day
2. 3-week post-recovery from bronchitis
3. Heavy training block due to lack of exercise during illness
ACHIEVEMENTS
1. PR on race day: sprint triathlon = 1:19
2. Mental resilience that turned the obstacles into competitive advantages
3. Sheer drive to push the limits for a PR in a race with little age group competition, but plenty of elite youngsters and an older “beast” to push him forward
“Looks like no PR’s today,” as he updated me on the rainy weather while eating his pre-race breakfast.
His remark was timely, as I was deep into reading “The Obstacle is the Way” by
@RyanHoliday .
So, I shared with him my mental game of always turning those surprise uncontrollables into competitive advantages during competitions.
Learning more about the backdrop to Yves’ pre-race routine after his PR, I am sure he would have achieved this without my unsolicited advice😉
But... I want to share this with all those who care about searching for those pillars of growth in life and sport.
Make those obstacles your North Star with laser focus.
Love the improvement process, not just the outcomes.
It continues to be an honor to guide athletes like Yves to better technique, because this is a true test of one’s ability to embrace the improvement process while experiencing the exhilarating outcomes like running efficiency, speed, and longevity.
