What if its not journalist and its a country that most products are pandering to? Hint: is not the US
The reason the death scenes are censored like this is because game journalists saw the gruesome death scenes in the first Tomb Raider remake and said, "Yeah these are inherently sexualized deaths." TL;DR - Some game journos have a weird gore fetish, got uncomfortable, so now we can't have violent deaths in Tomb Raider anymore.

Yes, not only have expectation have risen exponentially but most studios are not even willing to train ppl anymore. A third problem is hyper specialization. The triple A and many indies nowadays want you specialized in a very particular thing and if that thing is not in your portfolio you don't even get an interview.

Genuine question: would most senior artists today be hired with the portfolio that got them their first job? If not, perhaps the issue isn’t just how hard juniors work, but how far expectations have risen.

This is an interesting question. The answer is no, you are not designing the building, just rendering what they tell you in 3D. Same applies to my job. I am not an engineer, but I translate what engineers do to 3D.

Don't you need a specific degree for arch viz?

I think we should focus on things we can change. The gaming industry is not going to change because of talent saturation, so if you are frustrated with the layoffs or cant find a job then look to other industries that employ 3D artists, just know you will have to do a deeper search since those jobs usually do not have "3D artist" on the job title.

I understand the pushback, I was there once because it is really hard to get in the industry. You grind, you get rejection emails, no one tells you what you are doing wrong. I do think the advise of "just have a great portfolio" no longer works. I am not good at networking, so I made a Youtube channel. Almost every job I got came from ppl looking at my channel, not my portfolio.
So something I tell my students is intentional practice with constraints. I can understand the pushback but I truly believe Henning is right with context. Studies show that human productivity is only about 3 hours out of the day… 🧵

Before anyone comes at me, yes do still need a good portfolio but that is no longer the only thing you need.

A reminder that jobs for 3D artists are not only in the game or VFX industry. Lots of other industries need 3D work and provide a more stable work environment. Your name will never be on a blockbuster but your will have a steady income. You decide what live you want to live but stop saying 3D sucks because layoffs in the gaming industry

One thing @henningsanden post made me realize is a lot more people are going to school for 3D than I thought

It is not hustle culture. Do you call playing video games a hustle? I bet the answer is no. For me sitting down to do character work or figure out new Unreal Engine features is like playing video games.

All this has been doing is exposing people as talking utter bollocks bc they can't admit they can't balance their work and life properly. It's just hustle culture in a 3D Coat. I limit my hours *because* I love it and want it to Stay something I love, not despise from burnout.

I'll add to this and its gonna hurt some ppl. If you are treating 3D restricted to certain hours you dont like it. Getting a job in 3D is pretty hard for ppl who are really passionate, most jobs dont pay well so if you find yourself saying "I am only going to dedicate X amount of hours" this isn't for you. My 9 to 5 is 3D modeling industrial equipment, once I get home I go back to character work/ Unreal Engine
For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

When I explain how something works or why a decision was made in a game, I am adding context, it does not necesarily mean I agree with that decision

This is likely the outcome of using procedural tech for animation. AC shadows suffered from the same problem, that being said, when you bave thousands of NPCs that have unique dialog is hard to go handcrafted

These facial animations in Fable are looking really rough if I'm honest. The level of fidelity in the faces themselves is impressive but the NPCs are lacking facial expressions and seem very stiff. Really hoping that by the time the game comes out, the devs manage to fix them

Tourism aside. This is something I mention on my dissected video on Overwatch. Blizzard made the game to appeal to a more progressive audience and now they will get backlash if they try to get away from said audience
Is Overwatch going back to its roots of hot characters? R34 creators are already flooding the internet with content about Shion, Blizzard's new cyber-yakuza demon robot waifu... and of course, that also means AI model trainers and art creators are pumping out a lot of her as well. Of course... not everyone is happy. The usual pronoun warriors and the feminists aren't happy that she has an attractive face and a curvy body. “Why does she have to be hot?” “She needs a full robot face" “Overwatch keeps making skinny pretty Asian girls” “This is for the male gaze and objectifying women!” “too conventionally attractive for an Omnic" Overwatch used to have the monopoly on internet R34, but they have since been dethroned after games like Genshin Impact, and many of the other popular waifu games came out.

I've said this countless times. Is not up to the character artist how the character looks, thats decided by leadership.
So the artist who made the image on the right worked on "South of Midnight". They said that Microsoft discourages developers from creating curvy female characters in its games. The artist showed how they would depict their style, but Microsoft is against this. Guess women can't look beautiful in gaming anymore. We have seen this trend in Asian Games and even Anime as well Censorship is spreading to all forms of media

I know this is a hot take but big risk = big rewards. They would not be saying this if the movie bombed. The ppl who risked the money are the ones who reaped the reward. Happens with every business
