Three things that seem to be contributing to poor math achievement: 1. Multiple strategies for novice learners. Recommendation: Choose an efficient strategy that generalizes easily to (e.g.) larger numbers, teach it well, give lots of practice on it. 2. Too much focus on manipulatives & pictures. Recommendation: Fluency with abstract symbols sets kids up for later success. Move quickly to the abstract - that's where the majority of practice should be. 3. Not enough practice. Recommendation: Give lots of practice and then give more. It's how we get good at math.

A study from @durham_uni and the @UniofOxford finds major inequalities in identifying learning difficulties in England. Pupils with the same attainment are not identified equally across schools. Girls, disadvantaged pupils and those with English as an Additional Language are also less likely to be identified. This raises serious questions about fair access to support. Why would a teacher rather believe a child can’t read than believe a school proved every child can? I posted Steubenville’s results — lowest 5th grade reader reading at 5th grade level. 9 of 10 said I was lying. 1 of 10 asked how to do it. The data isn’t the problem. The belief system is. @ehanford @reading_league

This is exactly what our Manitoba Teachers did!
Teachers: you don’t have to wait for permission. Start a community group. Support a parent group. Feed them information. Show up however you can. And if you know a teacher doing this — protect them. They’re risking their job for kids who can’t yet read. That’s courage. Honor it. 💪 @Reading_League @NationalParents #ScienceOfReading #TeacherLeaders #ReadingJustice

I confess to using my 6th grade grammar book to teach 5th graders to diagram sentences. A frmr student, now a 5th grade teacher, just asked where she can get it. '82 to '26 = 44 years. Sometimes the innovation is 'doing what works'.

The author of the Reading Rope, Dr. Hollis Scarborough, reminds us: oral language is foundational to reading success. If we identify language struggles earlier, we can intervene earlier. Earlier support = fewer children experiencing the devastating effects of reading failure. This is how we protect our kids. This is how we change trajectories. 📚🧠 #AIMSymposium2026 @AIMtoLearn

Our CEO @ellenbroome was honoured to speak at this week’s Education Select Committee meeting in Westminster, on the topic of reading for pleasure. “For very many dyslexic children, reading is not enjoyable. It is difficult, exhausting, and something that they avoid." Watch the full video here: loom.ly/1i6hVnA #Education #SEND #Dyslexia

To every young person being underestimated and not given the support they need: You are not the issue. You were never the problem. The problem is the lack of clear pathways to diagnosis, understanding in education, and access to the right support. When we change the system, we change outcomes. Let’s keep pushing! #CommunityQuotes #Dyslexia #PushForChange
