During my visit to the Whipple Detention Center today, armed agents confronted us, ICE sprayed peaceful protesters and press with pepper spray and I was denied my legal right to conduct official oversight. This is Donald Trump’s America. And I’m not done fighting.

The videos I’ve seen from Minneapolis yesterday are deeply disturbing. As we mourn this loss of life, we need a thorough and objective investigation into how and why this happened—which will require full cooperation from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, along with the local authorities—and for the political rhetoric to be toned down. Immigration enforcement activities have greatly increased, leading to heightened tensions across the country. We need to ensure ICE officers have the necessary training and resources to safely—and with empathy and respect for human life—carry out these activities. As part of the investigation, I am calling for recommendations and policy changes to help prevent future tragedies. Yesterday was devastating, and cannot happen again.

This move from the federal government to remove our state BCA from the investigation of yesterday's homicide in South Minneapolis is deeply concerning. This investigation needs to be carried out with transparency, fairness, and without political influence.

My statement on the ICE shooting in Minneapolis today:

Minnesota investigators were forced out after an ICE-involved killing. The FBI swoops in. This isn’t justice- it’s a fucking cover-up! Trump and Noem built a system where federal agents police themselves after someone is murdered. That’s not law and order. That’s abuse of power.

Based on the video I’ve seen, the killing was entirely unwarranted and the ICE agent should never have been placed in that position in the first place. Obama deported >3 million people using law enforcement tactics that didn’t inflame an entire nation. There’s a better way to do this, Mr. President.
