This is an insightful - and optimistic - take on the consequences of AI for knowledge workers like myself. Even if we are the “coal” in this analogy.

Who else owns a physical product/device that *only* works with an app? We had a cooking thermometer that we loved but on 18 Dec they went dark. App no longer worked, company apparently bankrupt. The physical device is now nothing more than a souvenir. Bad product design? Surely. But shouldn’t there be some way to maintain functionality after an app dies for a device like this? Maybe there’s an opportunity here?

Makes me begin to worry a little about our robot vacuum and phones and Tesla and smart switches and, shoot, I need to make an inventory of cloud-dependent devices in our home…

Watch Nadella describe SaaS apps as nothing more than a CRUD database with some business logic, but once the business logic moves to AI agents, SaaS is over:

I have seen all this play out with the work lives of both my grown children - one in tech sales and the other working for small local businesses. Both kids see through the BS of the normative American job and both are willing to work hard for those who *actually* value them and respect their non-work lives.
🧵 The threatened Kids Today Don't Want To Work rant. Let me define what I mean here. I'm not talking about the 80/20 rule or kids getting out of college who think they will be paid six figures. I'm talking The Childen (30 and under) who want work/life balance.

Just want to thank the following accounts for 1) real on the ground reporting of wtf is going on in #wnc and 2) doing something about it. Got my daughter safely back from #BlackMountain and helping her to stabilize after the trauma and carnage. So grateful to these guys for doing the work and giving me eyes on the ground and a reliable handle on what’s happening after #helene : @Babowling12 @nicksortor @TheShawnHendrix @chrishallwx @ethanclarkwx @ncwxauthority @efisherwx

There are many many more. But I want to start acknowledging those who are top of mind. Thank you for what you’re doing and sharing on X. Much more than the MSM and gov.

Our crews continue to labor through very challenging conditions after #Helene – record flooding, storm debris, road closures and more – to repair damage and restore power. Here are some updates:

If you have the ability to donate, please do. This organization not only helps worldwide but has people and facilities in the #BlackMountain area that were themselves impacted. samaritanspurse.org/article/…

Our daughter was able to get out of #BlackMountain with her dog and boyfriend and is now safe with us near Charlotte, NC. What we have learned from them is devastating. #Helene #WNC 🧵

Water and supposedly food being handed out at the Black Mtn Ingles momentarily. Car lines are extremely long, but if you come on foot, the line is short.

Downtown Black Mtn has a lot of resources for people in need. Temporary cell tower by the fire department. Hot food and some water. Lots of people walking/biking to town.

This shows the terminus of all the flash floods and debris flows from the Chimney Rock, NC area. This debris is basically the town of Chimney Rock

I fear that the humanitarian disaster that we will see unfolding over the next few weeks is going to be horrendous and the 2nd & 3rd order effects will be an earthquake for the culture, economy and political landscape of North Carolina. My heart breaks. Prayers for the thousands still unaccounted for and unreachable. God have mercy on this region He blessed with so much beauty and vibrance. /end

An addendum: their downstairs neighbor was working at #Ridgecrest camps next to #Montreat and #BlackMountain. He said the nearby children’s home was gone, a landslide. He helped to grill up 300 burgers and take them to motorists stranded on I-40 on Friday. No idea where those hundreds of people are now. #Helene 💔
