Associate Professor of Physical Geography @PlymGeog. Mostly mountain hazards and landscape evolution. Moderately successful allotmenteer. Views my own, etc.
Well, I'm outta here... the whole auto-follow/migration thing isn't nearly as seamless as I'd hoped, so if you spot me on b*sky (same handle), give me a follow to reconnect and I'll do the same! See you on the other side...✌️

Colleague @Tom_Coulthard is part of SUPERSLUG, working to understand the long-term effects of natural disasters like flash floods, avalanches and landslides. Thank you @NERCscience for £1mn funding with @PlymUni & partners on the Chamoli Disaster aftermath

There has been a major dam failure in Poland. The translation of the Polish text is:
"The current situation at the Topola reservoir seen from the helicopter."
The location is 50.48, 16.95. It seems that the spillway has failed. Immediately downstream is another reservoir.
This year again, we are happy to offer 3 Grants of 300€ to help PhD students to attend the @BSG_Geomorph Post-Graduate Training Workshop in Windsor (UK, 2-5 December 2024)!

I am looking for a new PhD student to work on an exciting remote sensing project using airborne hyperspectral imagery and machine learning/AI to find ancient trees in the rugged and remote Tasmanian landscape. More information here: utas.edu.au/research/degrees…
3 Million Displaced in India & Bangladesh as Historic Rains Cause Devastating Floods.
Cumilla, in the Meghna river basin, recorded 2.5 times its normal monthly rainfall in just three days.
Homes, fields, roads, and infrastructure are submerged. Rivers in the Meghna and Ganges basins are at their highest levels in over five years.

Aimed at boosting biodiversity, improving water quality & strengthening flood protection amid worsening storms, campaign to demolish dams dates back several decades has intensified with funding infusion from $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill.

Most coverage of the #Thame GLOF has drawn comparisons with the 1985 GLOF from Dig Tsho, located one valley further north, caused by suspected ice avalanche into brimful lake. A few photos here for context. Like Thame, the 1985 GLOF carved a path through the village of Langmoche.
Saddened to hear of the devastation caused to #Thame by a glacial lake outburst flood. Away from the usual trek to Everest Base Camp, we visited briefly in 2010 and 2011 on the way to explore Dig Tsho. A small community in a stunning setting, the people were warm and welcoming.

Happy to announce the publication of a special issue on geomorphology and glacier/ice sheet behaviour! 🧊🏔️
We have 22 research articles, covering a range of timescales, spatial scales, methodological approaches and glacial processes.

ALT Geomorphology can facilitate a better understanding of glacier and ice sheet behaviour in several ways: by moderating glacial response to climate change; by providing rates of glacier change and sensitivity to climate; as information of ice flow properties and basal conditions; and as constraints for ice sheet modelling.
Delighted that our englacial esker paper has been included in this ESPL special issue on geomorphology and glacier/ice-sheet behaviour - check it out ❄️❄️❄️

MASSIVE amount of sediments are exported downvalley after extreme torrential events in the Alps! 🌊🪨
Here in Valpelline, a crater tens of meters deep opened up 300 m south of Aosta Hut (2788 m, south of Matterhorn)! 😱
Incision downstream is extreme too

8 DAYS after last major flood!
And majority still think this is a normal climate
We are LIGHT YEARS AWAY any kind of awareness and yet everything around us is collapsing
Was so predictable (and predicted) that it is almost laughable!
My term as BSG Treasurer ends this September - feel free to get in touch if you're interested in taking it on and want to discuss. It's a substantive role, and you gain a massive amount of insight as to how a charity like the BSG is run. Key duties summarised in the newsletter.
⭐️Check out the latest edition of our newsletter, which includes how to vote for the next BSG President! ⭐️ As well as updates from @PalaeoLou, @EdwinBaynes,
