🚨 €550K fine for biometric data misuse: A wake-up call for the public sector What happens when biometric identity systems scale without solid legal footing? Ireland just found out. The Department of Social Protection (DSP) has been fined €550,000 for unlawfully processing biometric data through its Public Services Card (PSC). The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) ruled that the DSP’s SAFE 2 facial recognition process lacked a valid legal basis and failed to meet GDPR transparency and assessment requirements. 📌 Over 3.2 million people had their biometric data stored. 📌 No lawful basis. Inadequate risk assessment. Lack of transparency. 📌 The DSP has 9 months to stop processing or clean up its compliance act.
