On both sides of the Atlantic, procurement is a hugely underrated policy lever. In the UK, we spend c. £400bn a year through intermediaries. But when I was a civil servant the topic was considered pretty disinteresting by most senior people.
Fun fact, related to this observation by @judgeglock -- essentially no public policy schools in America have a required class on procurement, and few even have an elective. (I once emailed most of the top ~20 schools to check, out of curiosity.)

Really concerning. Defence of the West requires weapons, companies need to make weapons. Frustrating to see so many institutions lining up against national sovereignty.
In the wake of a long term encampment on their lawn, Kings College, Cambridge has agreed to divest from all arms companies. Is it not important that we make the sort of arms used to support Ukraine? In the future, who will fund military development?

Britain's ability to support Ukraine is being held back by outdated ESG rules that are stopping banks and financial institutions from investing in our defence sector on the grounds that it is ‘unethical’. (1/3)

There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a victim: Ukraine. We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago—and to keep doing so. By “we,” I mean the Americans, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese, and many others. Thank you to all who have helped and continue to do so. And respect to those who have been fighting since the beginning—because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children, and the security of Europe.

Personally believe that nuclear has a big role to play. But we shouldn’t do ourselves down - we are a global leader in building and operating Data Centres (with AI ones in the pipe). Much more we can do but over £20bn announced in last 12 months too!
Really great and detailed piece on what it would take for the UK to win in AI infrastructure: tl;dr, get serious about nuclear. We have all the levers we need.

Everyone saying “no we can’t let the NHS use a proper joined up digital patient database, it’s all part of a plot to privatise British healthcare and sell your data” should be forced to read the dozens (hundreds?) of case studies like these bbc.co.uk/news/health-675031…
