The idea of NRP as techs & the idea of NRP as clinicians are not mutually exclusive. There is a need for both. Stop viewing NRP a one size fits all, & instead view it as the baseline credential for a diverse field- some roles in which do require degrees, and some which don't.
We keep having the same old debates in EMS which completely miss the point. To fix ourselves, we need to understand what it means to build a vibrant profession. Thanks to @NAEMSEpgh @medicmindset & @ProdigyEMS for the platform to talk about this.

We don't have a Paramedic shortage because of @CoAEMSP or @NREMT. We have a lack of desire on the part of Paramedics to work on ambulances, b/c it isn't typically an attractive environment. This is a leadership/workforce culture problem, not an accreditation or testing problem.
I gave an EMS continuing education presentation for the NH Fire Academy. I also recorded some of the slides for the benefit of the internet. Feel free to point and laugh.

This is the incredible story of an anesthesiologist who, in 1946, purposefully paralyzed himself using curare.
Though conditions were controlled, by the end of the experiment he was wide awake and fully paralyzed, without any sedation.

The answer: Lower pH relative to the cytoplasm!
pH is the -log of hydrogen in a solution. The electron transport chain maintains a chemiosmotic gradient by pumping H ions into the intramembrane space increasing the concentration and decreasing the pH.

Many of the processes we've discussed in Biochem are concepts I was introduced to during my initial paramedic training. However, with the benefit of basic sciences (like chemistry and biology) I now understand better how it all fits together.

This Krebs Cycle: interactive lyrics, diagrams, and flashcards really helped me solidify this knowledge that I'll definitely use all the time after I graduate.

1/2 Main takeaway: Intermittent fasting (IF) increases the rate of β-oxidation of fat for energy. Caloric restriction (CR) was almost as effective as IF at stemming metabolic syndrome. CR and IF together work well.

2/2 Linkage to Course: Glucose is an essential molecule for human life. It is not an essential component of diet because it can be synthesized from several pathways. It would seem the mechanism of IF forces β-oxidation of fat and gluconeogenesis from amino acids.
I've had so many #lightbulbmoment s in #hunterbiochemistry so far. Specifically that introns are not the useless bits of code I once thought. They could serve an important role in regulating the rate of transcription and translation.
The story of how the mRNA vaccine was made for SARS-CoV-2 is a triumph of modern science and genomics. To see this now tried-and-true technology applied to diseases that have evaded vaccines for so long is amazing. The lipid nanoparticle is a game-changer. #hunterbiochemistry
