Today, Michael Schumpp, Senior Director of International Affairs at the Meat Institute, testified before the House Agriculture Committee to highlight the critical benefits that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) has had for the U.S. agriculture sector and rural economies. The Meat Institute supports renewing USMCA for another 16-year term as provided under the agreement, while addressing any issues through existing consultative mechanisms rather than renegotiation. The Meat Institute also supports the preservation of common meat product names. His full testimony can be found here: meatinstitute.org/press/meat…

The Meat Institute applauds @SecRollins and @USDAFoodSafety for this plan. Small and very small processors provide jobs and invest in rural communities. They face unique challenges, with employees taking on many roles within a facility. These improvements should create real opportunities for growth and will improve daily operations. This plan will be especially beneficial to small beef processors who have been struggling due to the record high cost of cattle and other economic factors.
🚨 Support for small meat and poultry processing plants is here! @SecRollins today launched the Small Processors Action Plan, a new set of actions designed to make it easier for these businesses to interact with USDA, get timely answers, and resolve issues, without weakening inspection or food safety standards. Additionally, we've announced $60M in funding through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program to expand American meat and poultry processing. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 7, 2026. 🔗 usda.gov/about-usda/news/pre…

“American consumers need to know that New World Screwworm is not a food safety concern. Meat and poultry products are safe to consume,” said Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts. “Our first priority is to protect the health of the nation’s livestock. We are encouraging members of the Meat Institute to work with local, state and federal authorities to detect and eradicate the pest. “USDA has been working hard to prevent and respond to New World Screwworm. For a year now they have improved biosecurity by investing in protections and treatments and coordinating rapid response. We will look to USDA to brief industry stakeholders and call on them to consider allowing low risk terminal movements for slaughter to ensure animals continue to be processed. It is important for state animal health organizations to follow USDA’s NWS Response Playbook.”

We thank President Trump and @USTradeRep for prioritizing the issue of reopening China for U.S. beef, and for the positive & necessary first step of China renewing the expired listings of more than 400 U.S. beef plants. It is critical for China to lift all suspensions of U.S. beef facilities, and we look forward to working with the Trump Administration to reach this shared goal.
🧵🚨Here’s why #beef exports to China are a WIN-WIN for ranchers & consumers: Historically, China has been a top 3 purchaser of tongues, tripe, & tendons the #1 purchaser of hides & skins. These products are rarely consumed by Americans who crave burgers, briskets, & steaks.

🔥 I thoroughly enjoying chatting with Eric Schulze, PhD and Julie Anna Potts at yesterday's Food Lab at Google Summit. Bravo to Eva Antczak and the entire Food Lab team for a powerful two days of top notch discussion and networking. 🥳 I am incredibly grateful for Julie Anna's and the Meat Institute's attitude toward alternative meat production methods; this kind of focus on finding common ground and focusing on opportunities is incredibly important, and conversation is always good. 🙂

What a week in Washington, D.C. for our #EmergingLeaders during The Washington Experience! From touring poultry operations at Amick Farms in Maryland and exploring the National Mall, to studying leadership and advocacy at Mount Vernon’s George Washington Leadership Institute, participants gained firsthand insight into the people, history, and issues shaping the meat industry. The week wrapped up with visits to the U.S. Capitol and meetings with leaders shaping agriculture policy, where the group discussed key issues including nutrition, trade, and the upcoming Farm Bill. Thank you to Sen. @RogerMarshallMD's office, the @HouseAgGOP, our program sponsors @cryovac and @EnvironCo, and all who helped make this an impactful week of learning, networking, and leadership development.
