@JamesPlaskitt10 is so confident that no one’s been coerced into assisted suicide that he’s blocked me. He doesn’t want to hear about duo suicide in the Netherlands, where women with dementia have been judged fit to die with their husbands. Or the risk of coercive control.

Very much as we all thought when the blunt realities of which there are many re medically assisted suicide is explained to many members of the public they are more than formerly supportive, they are rightly appalled at the prospect.
The Telegraph: Leading pollster Andrew Hawkins reveals how assisted suicide is deeply unpopular among voters, showing how out of touch with voters reintroducing the assisted suicide Bill is. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/06…

What a thoughtful and responsible approach this MP is taking on this . he says he has been listening to his constituents on this matter and the implication is they have given him pause for further thought . I hope other MPs take heed .

I’m a liberal, not a libertarian. My rights to autonomy end where they entail the loss of freedom for others. We know that AD means that people will die through coercive control, self coercion and through desperation because of awful and inequitable access to palliative care.

Unfortunately this is spot on:
Labour MPs: the local election results are a disaster. We're incredibly unpopular. We need a new leader. Also Labour MPs: let's have another go at passing unsafe legislation that puts the elderly, victims of DV & the disabled at risk of death.

Letter from members of the Lords from palliative care, psychiatry and law, on the #AssistedDyingBill. >> "the Bill ... failed because too many of its supporters were unwilling to engage with the complexities of developing a law that is genuinely safe, equitable and compassionate." This is true.

some elements of the current parliament are profoundly anti-intellectual, immune to new and complex information or advised consequences and led solely in their conviction in this case their version of autonomous choice’

Labour’s @emmalewell “Absolutely dismayed that the Bill is being re-introduced. Not a single one of our major medical or professional bodies support it. A deeply flawed & dangerous bill that poses a real risk to the most vulnerable in our society.” independent.co.uk/news/uk/po…

This was one issue on which the Scottish devolved parliament really excelled in both their scrutiny and their decision.
Holyrood rejected AD because - despite a majority supporting the principle - MSPs properly scrutinised their bill and listened to expert opinion. The supporters of AD in Westminster appear to have learnt nothing from this…

West Lancashire MP @AshleyDalton_MP (Labour) is right to be "deeply concerned" that the deeply flawsed and dangerous Assisted Suicide Bill is being brought back to the @HouseofCommons by Lauren Edwards, the Labour MP for Rochester and Strood. Ashley Dalton told the BBC: "Voters put us in power to reduce the cost of living and fix the NHS. We have debated this deeply divisive and flawed assisted dying bill for over a year and supporters have refused to listen or to make the necessary changes." She said the bill would "hand sweeping unchecked powers over life and death and our NHS to future governments". The wisest thing which MPs can do is to reject this Bill at Second Reading. Appalling that the Bill’s new sponsor could be so misinformed about the legislation she has signed up to lead through Parliament. And shame on the campaigners who drafted these untruths for her.
1. This statement contains several inaccurate or confused claims. First, Edwards says the bill is only for those “at the very end of their lives.” But the bill’s “6-month prognosis” criterion is very broad: 1 in 5 of those eligible will actually have at least 3 years to live.

Really pleased that my colleague Lauren Edwards is reintroducing the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill. Terminally ill people deserve to have choice at the end of life, and I’m so pleased that Parliament will now have the ability to make a final decision on this Bill.

It is infuriating. Even more so when you realise this is a government bill behind the scenes, and it exists because they don’t want to pay for people to have quality palliative care. Kim Leadbeater was the face of this dangerous bill because Labour knew they’d win no votes with this, when their party is already in a wreck. You can read more here- x.com/talkthattalk_k/status/…

Absolutely infuriating that one of my colleagues has decided that what Parliament should focus on in the coming months - given everything going on in the world and here at home - is bringing back the assisted dying bill. Head in hands.

I must clarify this is NOT a Labour Bill. There are plenty in the party, like me, that do not support it and find it dangerously flawed and unsafe.
